Hokay... Yesterday, we only had to update our h2g2 name if we changed our BBC iD name. Today, we have to change it back after any posting we make on a messageboard.
Change of plan? Unforeseen complication? Incompetence?

Still Incognitas, Still Chairthingy, Still lurking, Still invisible, unnoticeable, missable, unseen, just haunting h2g2 Posted Dec 4, 2009
I'm trying to see what the problem is..I'm signed in both hootoo and the Beeb under my full name and I can post under my full name and yes I registered last week for a BBC id..using my straight name of Incognitas.
The sky didn't fall and I'm still here.

*sigh's* I'm glad I've not upgraded to this new BBC_iD it seems so complecating reading all these posts and about the new name size I'm just glad I don't have a long name Hmm I'm on a digibox *slaps forehead* durr!
I've read somewhere up there when someone went to read a blog there name change, hence I'm still on [SSO] I can read blogs what others have put about there difficulties, its just that I can't log into a certain page/upgraded message board you no what I really think its all 's.
But no one has answerd my question YET-> why change over from [SSO] to this complecating BBC_iD in first place???? From what I've seen of this new BBC_iD ie the message boards they're quite boring no colour just plain white background and black text, wow peoples names in italic.
Oh well I was thinking of getting a laptop and pay and go dongle net thingy but I doubt I'll bother, as I only use this to pass time in winter, so what is the BBC_iD for anyway just to post something called a blog what a name a blog god who invents such silly names?
And uploading when your putting something on a web page, shouldn't that be called downloading as its going down and when your taking something from the web that would be uploading I think the people who invented such words need there heads testing, all this silly computer talk bla bla bla! So . [ you people with the new BBC_iD out loud].

You talk of "uploading" when the data is traveling away from you, e.g. from your computer to a web page, and "downloading" when it is traveling towards you, e.g. from a web page to your computer.
If only US TV scriptwriters could get it right...

The notions of up and down are sorta irrelevant in cyberspace.
Same with ideas of now and then because Time is frozen in cyber-
space where space has no dimension or form.

'Always' is such a long time innit.
I remember (not so many decades ago) seeing my first flowchart.
The old 'top down' flowchart with big broad arrowheads (like the
ones that used to mark the King's oaks) pointing the way down.
Everything went from top to bottom (with occasional loops along the way).
Reminded me of most traditional hierarchic structures like kingdoms,
corporate management systems and pyramid schemes. So I told the prof,
"Nothing new here then, eh wot. All this talk of Basic and Pascal and Machine
Code and brave new whirleds. Humbug! It's just more of the same old same old."
Yup, always is a very long time indeed.

It strikes me as a very logical, physical metaphor: over there is a very, very large reservoir (of information) in some sort of big container; over hear there's a little tiny container (my hard drive). Between the two there is a pipe. The larger volume of the reservoir produces a higher pressure than does my little hard drive, so, if I open the valve on the pipe, information flows *down* to my harddrive. If I want to send information the other way, I have to pump it *up* the pipe, against the flow.
or
If I want information from my bookshelf, I have to take a book *down*. If I want to put information onto the bookshelf, I have to put a book *up*.
Nothing political at all.

Well, you could swap up and down if you used a mining metaphor, or . You just bought a Figeac 71, so you go put on a rack downstairs in the cellar for preservation. And when you want to drink it, you bring it upstairs from the cellar.
