There was a story in the news that since the newspaper printed what a prominent person said about another prominent person and what was said were lies then the one being lied against could sue not only the one telling the lies but the newspaper as well per a court decision. May be hootoo is leary of being sued?

I think that this puts non-UK researchers at a great disadvantage. How are we supposed to know what would be considered defamatory by British courts? It's hard enough tofigurre out what one can and cannot say in my *own* country.

"I think that this puts non-UK researchers at a great disadvantage"
I can't think why since the laws are pretty much the same in both countries as far as I know, but this should help:
If you go to the <./>HouseRules</.> Paul, you'll find a section about "Unlawful, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, racially offensive, or otherwise objectionable material", and in that section is a link to <./>HouseRules-Defamation</.>

One small question, asked elsewhere in a different form. What nationalities consititute a *race*? To be more specific, if the lovely South Pacific isle of Twonky-Tutu were to declare it's nationhood, how long before it's inhabitants are a race of Twonky-Tutuians? I speak in regard to the old WWW threads. Is an attack on a country or it's members always racism? Should the definition in the House Rules be modified or added to to include members of a country?

My abject apologies. I will repeat the question(s) in a more understandable form, to negate any need for an interpreter:

BV, the defamamtion rules are most definietrly *not* the same between the UK and the US.
In broad terms, in the US it is up to the plaintiff to show that the defendant deliberately defamed them. In the UK it is up to the defendant to show that they didn't defame the plaintiff and that what they said was true.

You seem tomknow more about it than me GD, but I would imagine that what constitutes defamation is pretty much the same on either side of the pond, and it was that which Paul was showing confusion about

Let me see if I got it noe----One can make a remark and a disparging one at that about the nation of France or Frenchmen as long as we do not remark about a certain race in France. Seems simple enough.
Now cl zoomer, you have to becareful as The Twonky-Tutlians(not Twonky-tutuians) named their island nation after their race. We actually are a derivative of the Zorkian and Kirvorkian races which melded during the penultimate millenium. The Zorians then took off for who knows where and the Kirvorkians all died off humanely but not necessarily legally.
So what is it you wanted to say about us Twonky-TuTulians? Remember HooToo is watching you.

I believe the Zorkians were last seen heading east along a narrow passage that leads east-west to the base of the dam.
I thoroughly regret and publicly apologise for the mis-pluralisation of the Twonky-Tutlian people. I further support their enjoyment of life, liberty, and the pursuit of coconuts and tuba fish. I do not however support their claim to be a race.

I don't have but a moment. My half naked woman wants me to treedle aroung the nearest sound and splash amidst the mers. She having been one likes to keep in touch. As for the Tweenie-Tutlians, they are scavengers and do not deserve to be mentioned in polite company. They almost drove off the tuba fish and spoiled many coconuts. They need to go back to their land what is left of it and leave us alone. My woman, my wife awaits, Until the setting of the second sun, may I bid you everlasting lift,
