I'm unsure - moderation isn't my thing. This is something that affects all DNA sites, so I'd try The Hub (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/).

To answer something in post 301:

"by forcing Mina to press the big red pre-moderation button thoughtfully provided by Jim"

You can be assured that I don't have a button like this. A decision like this wouldn't come from h2g2 Editors, it would come from higher up the chain of command, so they can take the responsibilty for owning this type of button.

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

thanks Ashley.

i think you are replying to my question, but neither the 'this posting' button, the red buttons, nor the back one post button are working. they all just go to a page with no post on it. this was happening last night too. if its still doing it later i'll report it as a bug.

Interesting article Ashley.

Do you italics understand how frustrating this is for us, don't suppose you can answer though!

Kaz,

Yes we do, especially as we know the power of the DNA technology. But we must all make the best of a difficult situation and use the freedom of speech we have in the areas provided and act constructively towards a better system for the future.

If you want to take part in this, I recommend the thread on the Hub I posted earlier (F94020?thread=258677&latest=1) where this issue is being discussed.

Cheers for now, as I'm off to lunch!

Ashley

Reefgirl (Brunel Baby)

Y'know I've been thinking about all this flag-waving-UNFAIR!!!!!!! chat that has been going on, if the Powers-That-Be had said we don't mind you talking about the war just don't get political none of this would be happening, everybody knows it is human nature to do exactly the opposite of what you have been told to do so the moment the announcement went up and the Beeb started shaking the big stick at us the postings on the war doubled so now the italics and the mods are going mad making sure policy is upheld and we are making sure smoke is coming out of their 'yikes' button. Basically what I'm saying is the PTB should have known what they were letting themselves in for the moment they implimented the *whisper* Don't Mention the War policy, that particular 'I'm going to do the opposite' gene in humans is not going to go away so how about some compromise

Tango, maybe you should query that on the Hub. As far as I know there is only one 'uber-user' (and I'm guessing there is one other) who has that button. And it's not any of us.

Tango - Mina's not lying. Although there is a button to put the whole site into pre-moderation, Mina isn't the person would would get to wield it. It would probably be me, in fact.

And it's a radio button, not a big red button. Just so we're clear.

can it not be a big, red, radio button? just for the symbolism?

Felonious Monk - h2g2s very own Bogeyman

Can you code a button which puts the rest of the world into pre-moderation? Then we might get some sense on this issue! smiley - winkeye

"Editors can also change certain aspects of their own DNA site. The most important is the ability to switch the whole site into pre-moderation mode, in which no content is visible until it has been approved by a Moderator. We're happy to say that this 'panic button' has never been needed on a DNA site, but it's there just in case."

It seems that need editing then... Doesn't Mina count as an editor for a DNA site? Namely h2g2? smiley - erm

A little bit of semantic tweaking to make things explicitly clear is necessary.

We'll look into that anon.

I'm guessing it's not exactly top of the agenda right now, though, with the current goings-on, eh Ashley?
