They *are* being parsed, because there's a global list of smiley codes, all of which get translated to <SMILEY TYPE="something"/> so when a skin doesn't want to display a particular smiley, it doesn't know what was originally typed, so it has to put the "something" into angled brackets. It's either that or making them vanish altogether.

I can foresee a riot breaking out the first time another site gets a new smiley that isn't on any of the h2g2 skins...

Well its very tasteful...I agree about the having a dedicated book section, not to mention splitting going out into different sections (pub/club/theatre/art/music etc etc).
From what I've read in the message boards its all a little bit serious...but that might just be the groan up look.

Hi all,
Here's a response to a few of the questions asked in this conversation thread.
The idea is that you use your normal personal space across all DNA sites, as it makes tracking your conversations simple.
If you'd like your space to look beautiful and relevant in all skins you just need to use the tag. You can find out how to use the tag on this page: A686603
The Collective House Rules policy of four strikes and you're out are the same as the h2g2 and Hub rules, all of the sites give an official warning before the three periods of suspension, when appropriate.
Smileys; the Collective Editors decided that not all of the h2g2 smileys were relevant to the Collective. It's a fair point, , and are not that likely to crop up in conversations over there!

Hi
The Collective Eds wanted to have smileys of their own design, so, they decided to go for a limited set at first. They may decide to extend the range later, but I expect they'll go with the existing set for a while and see how it goes.

I think collective looks like a very good site. It's interesting the way that every DNA site (h2g2, 360, sense of place, collective, are there more?) are similar enough to get used to very quickly, but also unique enough to be independent of this, the original.
And I love the idea of giving out prizes for getting on the front page. Got an email today to inform me that my review of jay and silent bob strike back has won me a Mint Royale album.
say, does anyone know who the Mint Royale are?

"if you're a big fan of Wham!, keep it on h2g2!"
Fer Christ's sake, do we _have_ to encourage people?
Idiots, spammers, Americans and bad-spellers I can cope with.
Wham! fans are pushing the boundaries.

At first sight, it is very pleasant to look at. Which just goes to show I didn't revolt at Brunel just because it was something new. With the introduction of Brunel I just couldn't see the point of playing around with skins when H2G2 is about the content, and that was just change for the sake of change.
So we can post to Collective and join in all the community activities without having to register? Or, as jwf said, do we have to re-register under a new handle?

Your existing identity will work on collective. You don't have to create a new identity. Unless you want your musical taste to remain anonymous, of course...

Why are people laying into Wham! all of a sudden. The untalented one in the group's Mum used to be my babysitter. They're a really nice family I'll have you know...

I just saw "One Hour photo," which also
has a great performance by Robin Williams.
I don't feel like commenting about it
on the Collective, as I felt squeamish
enough about it to leave after an hour.
Great film, but not what I really wanted
to see after the many cases of child sexual
abuse in the Boston area lately, particularly
by priests and doctors. If even photo
counter guys are going berserk, I want to
find another planet right away!

I don't think 'One Hour Photo' has made it to Britain yet, but I've just looked it up on the Internet Movie Database at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0265459 , and it certainly sounds interesting. I'd definitely like to see it, so I hope it crosses the water soon!

It's coming out in Germany this month and on reading the pre-release write-ups, we had it down as a must-see. We have to wait a bit for the original version to come to the local cinema, but it's worth waiting to hear Robin Williams beautiful voice. Is the film that hard to stomach?
