Whilst this is a welcome development, I am concerned that there is already duplication between the two sites (A169616 and http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/place-devon/A712522) is this a good thing or a bad thing.
If we want people to actually USE h2g2 (and I still beleive that the number of people who do so could be counted on one hand) then what message does this send out?

Good question!
Bear in mind that all DNA content ends up in just one database, irrespective of where it's created. Do a search in any DNA site, and all matches from all DNA sites come up. What this says to me is that we are now able to re-version h2g2/DNA to appeal to completely different demographics.
Face it, h2g2 is not for everyone, by any means. Spreading DNA like this might cause duplication - hell, h2g2 is a guide to *everything*, so it's bound to happen - but it means the development of a guide to life can include everyone, be they local or global, into Douglas or not into Douglas, and they can do it in a website environment that suits them.
I can understand why it might appear that overlap is a bad thing, but I reckon it's an excellent vindication of h2g2, to be honest.
You've also got a worryingly large number of fingers, CHawke.

Now there's a novelty...
C Hawke, type letterboxing into the search box, it gives you both entries, and tells you where they came from now...
I get the impression this should greatly improve the quantity of information available and make the guide much more popular.
If only the search engine weren't quite so idiosyncratic (sorry Jim - I know its not your fault.

Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated!
On another note, I just ACEd a newbie from Lancashire and was able to tell them about the 'new toy'.

What is a "sitefilter"?
27 March 2002: Sense of Place Pilot Sites Launched
Whisky Posted Mar 27, 2002
I thought of that, but it would seem a little odd for someone trying to find out who was posting to them if I ever posted to one of the other sites so I just left a general intro at the top of my page and sitefiltered all the H2G2 specific info out below it.

Well, if I ever wander off of h2g2, then I'll change it...

you've got a point there, as I spend 18 hours a day logged into h2g2 I can't see me having much time to use any other sites

Heck, if sitefilter ever filters out the footnotes, I'll have to do some changes on what my space says on non-h2g2 sites...

It's pretty simple, actually... I don't know much, computerwise, but the insructions were clear enough... And I only had to yell for Guru help when I wanted to test a page so I could grab the blob (couldn't remember how!)

Cool I like the fact that the DNA searchers always search all DNA based sites,
Would it help even further if the Editors of other DNA sites when they approved, edited or whatever contributions searched for worthwile links across the comunity (this of course goes for h2g2 sub-editors)
Also do we have to put the full URL for non-h2g2 entries or can we just put A712522 (no point answering that as I will see what happens straight away!)
Not over digited just over cynical

So "Sense of Place" (SOP?) has a text only version - when will w get one of those here? (for the rare occasion I link in via my old Psion 5 (assuming my current boss doesn't ask for it back when I leave his employment))

You have to put in the whole URL, at least for personal spaces... Tried to show someone the other night what I'd done with 360 by doing it the short way, and it just went to my space here, which I didn't change at all...

C Hawke, you can add it to your own pages, but the disclaimers outweigh the content... - see A525881 for an example.
