That little naming convention can cause some confusion for us americans.
I guess the story goes a little something like this. American invents game. Rather than invent new name for game, american decides to take name from old game and apply it to new game despite the fact that, while feet are important to new game, they aren't nearly as important as in old game. To avoid confusion, new name is invented for old game, while old name is applied to new game. Rest of world doesn't "get it," so keep referring to old game by old name, while giving new name to new game. American is baffled as to why some weirdo refers to soccer as football.

I had to read that twice to fully understant it. I do get it now though, and it causes confusions even where it is obvious that american football isn't going to be played ie where there are no goal posts, pads or helmets, like a school gym.

I had to read that twice, because you posted it that way
Perhaps an englishman should invent a new sport, call it basketball, and start refering to basketball as orange-ball-through-the-hoop-game.

Nonono I'd invent a new game, call it basketball, and start calling what actually IS basketball say, handball. Which would cause confusion in France too 'cos that's where handball originated.
