Talking Point: Alternative Winter Olympics

A hand holding a freshly created snowball.

As the events at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver continue apace, and the world's greatest alpine athletes fling themselves down slalom slopes and around ice rinks with the hopes our their nation's resting upon their thin, lycra-clad shoulders, our thoughts have been turning to the winter activities that aren't featured in this year's line-up.

Never mind cross-country skiing, curling and figure skating, what about the pursuits that we ordinary mortals regularly indulge in when the snow falls and the ice descends upon our streets?

Are you a dab hand at clearing ice from your windscreen? Are you unbeatable in a snowball fight? How come those 'sports' aren't included in the Winter Olympics? But what if they were? What if? What if... ?

So...

  • If we were to stage our own alternative, rival1 Winter Olympics, which activities do you think deserve to be included?

  • Are there any wintery pursuits that you consider yourself to be world-class at? Snow sculptures? Clearing your path? Snowmen? Making snow angels? Avoiding yellow snow2? We want to know.

  • Or is the best way to cope with icy conditions, to wrap up at home, avoiding activities of any kind? Is the only curling you're likely to be doing is curling up on the sofa, watching the box?3

Over to you...

1Okay we're unlikely to challenge the popularity of the real Winter Olympics, but then they've got 109 years on us.2Not necessarily what you think it is. Snow in its purest form is white, of course, but other colours exist. Yellow snow, for instance, can be caused by levels of pollen or pine. And animal urine, of course, but let's not dwell on that.3Perhaps watching the BBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics, for example.
