Talking Point: Cheesiness

Where'd the cheese go? I don't know.
- Ween, 'Where'd the Cheese Go?'
Time was when we celebrated naffness in all its forms. Back in the late 1980s and 90s admitting a penchant for cheesy songs, movies and clothes was like a badge of honour.
Of course, this suspension of good taste was responsible for some horrendous crimes against reason – Jive Bunny, Hawaiian shirts, 'amusingly' named cocktails, Noel's House Party – but in these post-ironic times have we lost that sense of fun?
So strap on your Deely Boppers, pull on your Mallet's Mallet thinking cap and let us know what you think...
Are people just too self-aware and too busy trying to be cool these days to let loose and embrace the things that style and fashions forgot? And is that necessarily a bad thing?
And why were people once so keen to revel in the reviled? Was it a peculiarly British quirk?
When did 'cheese' become a catch-all term for all things rubbish or tacky? There is some debate among etymologists, but does anyone know exactly when it all started?
And what do you think counts as the cheesiest thing of all time? Any movies, songs or chat-up lines that stick in your mind and/or throat?
Let us rejoice and, in the words of the great Alan Partridge, say "Smell my cheese!"
