The very thought of controlling a real live motor vehicle sends me into palpitations (though Gran Turismo seems to hold no perils...). I think it's basically to do with a mistrust of my own abilities - cars can kill! Strangely enough, the smaller the vehicle I travel in the greater the fear...

I can identify with this although I do drive and I don't have much choice about it. Mostly I am fine with it but some days I have to steel myself to get in the car. If I go on holiday I move heaven and earth to get someone else to drive because otherwise, it's just not a holiday for me - I feel too stressed. It makes me laugh that the government wants us all to give up our cars - if there was any serious alternative I'd do it tomorrow and never have to get into the thing again.

You say cars can kill but that isn't it. People do. I think that you know this and that is why you are afraid. You are afraid of being responsible of a death. You seem like a kind person that doesn't want anyone to be hurt. Were you ever in a car accident at a young age. Then again maybe you shouldn't take advic from someone who is scared of seagulls

The car is the weapon.... the person incharge is who controls the weapon.... now you have been trained and all you need now is confidence and that comes with more and more and more use of the weapon......
Take control as much as possible and it will become easier....
I say this after becoming a qualified driving instructor after having a great fear of driving ....... Also I was employed as a telephonist/ receptionist ....when I at one time used to take full quick strides out of the office when the phone rang !
So just keep at it.... find the inner calm , its there some where.. just wish I knew how I found it ......

Not much chance of me getting inner calm, there's nowhere round here that sells it
I've never actually sat behind the wheel of a moving vehicle (not counting dodgem cars), and I have no intention of doing so either.
Possibly just as well I didn't bring up my fear of talking... damn.
