nah there're ways of administering the antidote to a dead conversation, such as saying 'that really killed the conversation'. But saying 'yep' repeatedly in a two person conversation does kill it off eventually.

1st rule of weapons testing: don't do it on your turf, unless it's in a lab.

That depends on the weapon. For example, if Arten decided to test his grav-wave, it would be far better for him to test it on his turf, outside of a lab, than anywhere else because anywhere else there's a small chance of him hitting his turf.
