I am used to San Francisco as quite tolerant of it's eccentrics, which you do mention in the very next sentence. Even so, I had a hard time parsing "and as the Hitchcocks" as "and because the Hitchcocks" simply because by the time I learned about Ms Coit, she was already well-beloved.
gentile sensibilities-> possibly: gentle sensibilities? , but since the elite of the city at the time was very likely Not Jewish, perhaps the author really meant it as originally written.
