h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

As you open the door, darkness seems to hit you like a cloud. You step forward, and there appears to be a wall in front of you, which rather confuses you. Njan appears, and says... "Oh... don't mind the wall" and proceeds to walk through it. You follow him, and chance upon a smallish cabin, furnished sparsely, but with one wall entirely uncovered. "It's a softscreen", he says. You don't know entirely what this is, but you nod anyway, and soon go about your business.

*nods and goes about his business*

*smiles*... look.... *taps his watch*.. *the softscreen clicks, and on it is a perfect image of what is happening on deck at the moment*.

It's a wormcam. You can link pretty much anything up to the softscreen, but wormcams are really handy. It's a very small invisible wormhole that lets in light. You can see anything, anywhere, assuming you know how to use the system.

Hmmm, might come in handy one day. Let's see now - what's going on in the female sanctuary right now?

*click*.... *suspenseful pause*... wow... *looking at screen*... I didn't know that was physically possible...

*turns off softscreen and walks up on deck, leaving a small piece of card that says "Push for attention" next to a small brass bell on the table in the middle of the room*

*Wanders by and out of sheer nosiness peers her head round and through Njan's screen thingee*

Oh! A little brass bell and a note too!

*This is too much for Gwennie to bear and she picks up the bell and rings it*

That was fun!

*Rings again and again and again and again....*


Wheeeeeeeeeee!

*the door slams shut, and grills appear over the windows, trapping Gwennie in the room. The room almost seems to growl at Gwennie*

*Njan appears through a door in the wooden panelling on one side of the room*

"Can I help", he says, pushing a button underneath the table and undoing the changes the room made to itself.

*Looks around at the room hesitantly, not quite certain at what she thought she saw and rubs her eyes*

Oh hello Njan!

Is this your cabin? It's very..."nice".

*Fidgets and feels slightly awkward*

I just dropped by to say hello and to see how you're settling in...I like your bell!

*Crosses her fingers behind her back and hopes that her reputation for being nosy hasn't preceded her*

*grins*... thankyou... I like it. It changes, too. Room... Beach, Sandy Island, Grenada, West Indies, please.

*room changes to an exact copy of the Sandy Island beach near Carriacou*.. beautiful. ....

* enters room cautiously *

* Looks for Njan *

* Does not see him so leaves a note - Njan, I would like to take you up on that offer of help with my mission to find a supply of 'that' beer that we can 'borrow'. I am going out looking again, will sneak back on board from time to time so if you leave me a note in a bottle behind my bar... Hope to hear from you soon. Light *

*appears just before light can leave*

Excellent. ... We'll probably need some more people, but what's the battle plan?

*Rubs her eyes and thinks that she's obviously had one to many and sits down to think about it*

Still, if I am suffering from delusions, at least they're pleasant ones...

*Wriggles her toes and the sand and watches the waves caress the shore*

*Rings the bell*
Hi! I am Hatifnat as you see. I just finished furnishing my greenhouse, you see, I'm the gardener of this ship. I guess you could use the screen to take a look at the greenhouse, but you are welcome IN the greenhouse as well.

*strolls by and humms and old Tina Arena-tune to himself*
