It depends what skin your using:
if you are in Alabaster, the one with the white background, you should always be able to see a who's online button, regardless of what page you happen to be on. (unless, your computer like mine seems to have a moral objection to loading all of the alabaster buttons at the same time)
If you're in Classic Goo, the blue one, there isn't a who's online button, you have to follow a link from someones page or the front page if you want the small, popup version, or you can follow this link http://www.h2g2.com/online to have it in a normal window.
You can change skin using the preferences option that you used to change your nickname.
If your user space type is set to Guideml, you can use the following code to get the link to the popup window on your page:
Click here to see who's online
Find out more about that here: http://www.h2g2.com/Guideml-clinic
Erm, I hope this answers your question!

Joanna, or anyone who can assist,,,, once again,,, At the moment I seem to be experiencing changes in 'skin' throughout the site. Most seriously, my home page is alabaster and I cannot locate a 'preference' button.

You don't happen to be using BT internet do you? They have some kind of hidden proxy server which hasn't gotten the hang of skins...
the preferences button should be in the panel of buttons third from the right, between shop and company info. (http://www.h2g2.com/UserDetails)
PS thanks for putting our campaign button on your page

No - my server is NTL, might they have problems too?
At the present moment I can change skin in the outside world, but no matter what, my home space stays as blue goo. I am unable to check, therefore the 'preference' button on that page, in that skin....but I am fairly certain it was not there when I posted last; and when I was alabaster 'at home'. Is that possible ?
Fraid this is all starting to sound more 'Lewis Carol' than 'Douglas Adams'. Let me assure you that it is not detracting from my enjoyment of your BOOTIFUL site, and maybe the feedback is useful for others.

How weird. I don't know who you should tell... perhaps we can get Abi (http://www.h2g2.com/U281) to help - she may be able to ask some techie...
I'm glad you still like it here, though. In goo the preferences button is on the left hand side of the screen...

Hey there! So, how new is new? I mean, I've been hanging about lately but haven't really participated much so am I still new?
I see you have a nice discussion of children's books going... Fraid I don't have much to add to that line. I don't often read childrens literature, but maybe I should. After all this Harry Potter (is that right?) thing is huge!

Thanx Joanna

A little bit of confusion(!) about the skin at 'home'. What I meant was - in 'alabaster' there was no 'preferences' available, as far as I remember. Unfortunately, I cant get 'alabaster' at 'home' at the moment...

Hey Joe (as Jimi Hendrix once said)...
If I remember correctly, the Preferences button in Alabaster only moved to the top of the screen in last week's update - before that it used to be in the box on the right hand side beside the "Edit page" button.
Does that help at all? No, probably not...

Abi, Joanna, - All appears puurrfect at the moment, I suspect pixies with their magic wands have shooed the gremlins

Abi Posted Aug 1, 2000
Big Joe are you updating your page when you change the preferences. In Goo the link should be on the left side of the page as you look at it
EV - good point and one that I had completely forgotten that one

I do wish I could have recorded the 'glitch' as it unfolded. I feel a bit like a 'UFO' spotter without a camcorder. As I say all is Tickitty Boo at the moment ..

Now, well then . .that is me extremely happy. I hope you don't mind as I have invited a very nice friend of mine to join- 'Granny Smith' by name and slightly confused by nature !
I'm sure your tender ministration will ease her metamorphises into h2g2 reality.

Abi, Joanna - further developments in my boring skin condition(!). From what happened last night, it seems I have been 'not logged in' during these 'skin' anomolies, even though they started from my 'home' page - hence the lack of a preference button.
Maybe I am accessing this site in an incorrect manner ? As an addition to my 'favourites, I have included direct access to 'my space', bypassing the 'log-in' screen; could this be the source I wonder ??
