I hope this isn't too soon after the discussion, (I'm not sure on the protocoll here) but I've taken Smokehammer's Fried Egg entry and added all the other kinds of fried eggs I could think of.

And put it in Guide ML.

I will add all the contributors from that thread by tomorrow and may have a few more empirical times to add, but I couldn't possibly eat another egg for today!

But I don't want to tread on anyone's toes.

By the way, I wasn't really sure what "Sunny Side Up" strictly should be, so please correct me there.

Do you think I could add a section on what to serve with the fried eggs, or is it long enough already? Or is it described well enough in the link to the "Full English"

for me it's just the alternative to having an egg flipped over (some people don't like looking at the 'big yellow eye' apparently)

This is a good entry but I think the Sunny Side Up recipe should be checked. i know some people (actually know them) who like an egg flipped over and cooked some more so that it has a thin coat of 'white' over what had been the top.

I tend to put hot bacon on the top of the egg to keep bacon warm while the egg 'catches up' and also to cook any 'snotty bits' that might remain.

I suggest not using 'snotty' in any receipes

Good luck with the entry

All I know about "Sunny Side up" is that the white is not cooked, as opposed to "Easy Over". So I am hoping for some expert comment on that.

Once upon a time I heard a story of a blind (by birth) guy who had had his vision somehow surgically restored, and who became crazy after seeing a smiley - friedegg. Apparently he felt like the yellow bit was jumping at him or something.

This enlightening tale may well be apocryphal, though.

Ah, and a fried egg is the way to turn a croque-monsieur into a croque-madame, too (you just add the egg on top of it) smiley - 2cents

excellant article, i particurlarly liked thatyou have flipping oil opver the egg as an alternative to flipping it - makes it much nice as it gives the same effect without burning.

Mmmmm... Nicely done smiley - ok

>>...but if a fish slice is necessary to transfer the egg...<<

Fish slice? Whatever are you talking about?
(not only am I handicapped by speaking american and not english but I'm also very stupid in the kitchen)

>>Make sure the fish slice is under the whole of the egg..<<

There! You said it again! smiley - wah

Ok smiley - brave Let's see what else I can be obtuse about...

>>a number of hotels now allow you to fry your own eggs at a side table<<

smiley - huh Well, why on earth leave home in the first place if you have to cook? Honestly. I wonder if there's a name for this kind of situation.

>>...as well as setting off the smoke alarm.<<
Smoke alarm? smiley - doh
I always thought that thing was the kitchen timer to tell you when you've got things burnt just right.
One lives and one learns.

>>To avoid dropping a broken yolk into the pan, break it onto a saucer...<<
Can you see how an idiot like me would interpret this as "break the yolk onto a saucer instead?

I'd suggest
->To avoid dropping a broken yolk into the pan, first break the egg onto a saucer...<-

>>messy eaters, or those who enjoy eating lots of brown crispy bits<<
Now you're talking My language smiley - biggrin

(having said that, I'm definitely going to try the "alternative method" next saturday morning)

Excellent! <smiley - cheers

Well what do you call fish slices in the US Pailaway? They are that ubiquitous piece of kitchen equipment

thus:

A spatula!

Fish slice is so utterly unfamiliar as a name for anything other that a slice of fish, that I actually thought one used an actual slice of fish.

Well, there's one less mystery smiley - biggrin

A spatula is used for icing a cake in my kitchen. At school we used it for applying thick paint and at the doctor's it gets rammed down your throat to look at your tonsils. But I'll put it in all the same.

I went through the whole thing trying to iron out the "breaking the yolk in the saucer" type of boob, and then I missed that one!

Your comments are really valuable paillaway. I could write reams on most entries because, not living in the UK, I've got no idea what people are talking about a lot of the time. So I am happy to accommodate you by explaining what a fish slice is!

The bit about the hotels was quoted verbatim from h5ringer. I don't think you were asking me to delete it or justify it, so I haven't changed that.

I've made the alterations asked for above and have added a chapter on frying large amounts of eggs, which I had at the back of my head while I was writing. This hasn't been put to the test yet (oh God, that means I'll have to eat more eggs tonight!), so really I shouldn't have put this into Peer Review. Sorry. I hope it will just mean minor adjustments, if any.

I've also expanded a bit on why your egg should be fresh.

I've done another few tweaks while I was at it.

So tonight I've got to try frying them in the oven and cutting them out with a cereal bowl and add all the researchers who've contributed ideas or been quoted.

hang on - spatulas in the UK mean something different entirely - they are those bendy things used to scrape out cake mixture and cream from glass bowls. Or to use in a science experiment.

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/51171464/Sell_3pc_Silicone_Spatula_Set.jpg

some spatulas are not heat resistant so would be unsuitable in a frying pan. My dad is frequently in the doghouse for melting my mum's new spatula when cooking breakfast.

given the numerous 'things' that spatula can mean, it's easy to get lost.

One site, http://www.uta.fi/FAST/US1/REF/usgbdiff.html , Selected Vocabulary Differences Between British and American English has spatula meaning 'tongue depressir' in the US

Fish slice = pancake turner, spatula (kitchen tool); U.S. spatula = G.B. tongue depressor (medical instrument)

This seemingly innocent entry is becoming a minefield !

I do like this article though, especially because it explains the difference between sunny side up and all the other variations. I especially like the use of the smiley - friedegg smiley in the footnote!

I mean what would h2g2 be without footnotes? By the way, I think h2g2 is written in lower case.

The 'flat wooden spoon' shown top http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Homewares,Kitchen-utensils,Spatula-29703 is what I would have considered as a spatula (also in manmade materials)

Apparently a 'fish slice' (which I guessed rather than understood) is an 'indented spatula' in some places

But couldn't resist this http://images.google.fr/images?hl=fr&q=Photos+spatula&lr=lang_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=IRCuSs2hFcefjAeyv5CBCA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4

Have fun with the entry !
