Seems a bit on the brief side, but that's probably because I know the area
Could mention a few no-go areas or how just five minutes walk from the city centre and you are into derelict buildings, the only European city where that is the case.
Something about the Post Office. That usually comes up whenever I walk around Dublin, site of the 1916 uprising I think, might be worth a mention
And I can't believe you managed a piece about Dublin without mentioning Guinness.
BTW there are three universities and a technical college in Dublin: Trinity College Dublin; University College Dublin; Dublin City University and the Dublin Institute of Technology. Trinity is the most central but UCD has some buildings in the centre of town. They are all separate institutions and I didn't think there was ever a Dublin University per se. The "College" title seems to refer to the higher education status rather than a collegiate system in the vein of Cambridge or Oxford.

Thanks for those comments, I'll look into them.
Trinity College is actually the only college of a university called the Dublin University. This is not well known and probably not of any interest, so I will remove it from the article. Up to quite recently there were only two Universities in the Republic, the National Univeristy of Ireland, which had colleges in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Maynooth, and the Dublin University. Recently, there have been a number of colleges "promoted" to University, including Dublin City University, the University of Limerick and so on.

Well I only briefly touched the system a couple of years ago when I was applying for places, I wasn't quite as aware of the background. I'm not actually resident but tend to visit family between one and three times a year so I only really know a little

Thanks anyway!
I've added that most serious of omissions, Guinness. I've also put in notes about the derelict buildings and the GPO. I've simplified the description of Trinity College.

Some thoughts:
1 - A few Dublin pubs are already in the official guide so you could link to them. As is the Guinness brewery. See also http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A522091
2 - Every weekend the Merrion Square is surrounded by a number of artists selling their paintings. Some very good stuff, and all open to price negotiation.
3 - Theatres. The Gate and Abbey are both world famuous.
4 - Getting around: DublinBus run open top tourist busses taking in all the sites. As do GFuide Friday, but they also go to Pheonix park. If children are with you then the "Viking Splash" tour is a must. The engine of these WW2 amphibious landing craft makes too much noise to actually hear the commentary but you get to wear a helmet and scream at the locals.
5 - Other topics of conversation...corruption trials.
(I'm not really here, btw.)

Aren't there bullet holes still visible in the facade of the GPO?

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Apr 23, 2001
It appears that you are right about the bullet holes, although I never noticed them myself.

I've added links to Dublin Pubs, Guinness and the Guinness Brewery.
I've added a short section about Theatres, another about Guided Tours.
I've mentioned the paintings on Merrion Square.
Thanks .

Coming on nicely, Gnomon!
I think that when you briefly mentioned Grafton Street you could also point out that at the top end is the statue of Molly Malone (to give her her proper name, MTRF!), while at the bottom end is another fine Georgian square, St. Stephen's Green - a beautiful place to pause for breath on a shopping trip, donated to the people of the city by Lord Ardullin, a member of the Guinness family.
Like London - but rather more successfully - Dublin has redeveloped its dockyards into a high-tech office centre, primarily the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC), on the North side of the Liffey just West of the Customs House (another fine building).

With regards to Guinness, again
I heard a rumour when I was over for easter that Guinness are in the process of shutting down their operations in Ireland entirely and in Dublin in particular. You might like to check that and maybe mention people should try and visit as soon as possible before they move out

Is mise Duncan Posted Apr 23, 2001
This is a misunderstanding - they are shutting down their administrative/payroll sections and some logistics, but the St. James Gate brewery will stay open for the rest of its 9000 year lease

Hello,
They are also shifting production of Harp from Ireland to a brewery in Canada. Some people I know are upset about it, not just out of sympathy for the brewers soon to be out of work, but they don't feel the quality of the Canadian stuff tastes as good.
Yours,
Jake

I've added references to Molly Malone, the two women shopping at the Halfpenny Bridge and the Anna Livia fountain. I will not include their nicknames, as the only purpose of these is to denigrate the city. Stephen's Green is in there too, but please note, Stephen's Green is at the top of Grafton St (the south end) while Molly Malone is at the Bottom (the north end).
I do not intend to mention the (docklands) financial services centre. This is a guide for tourists, not for potential investors!

First, a small point about tenses, you can't say that car growth is growing exponetially, and then add that it only applies for the last ten years. this needs paraphrasing.
You mention a number of collages/universities, and galleries and museums. These will almost certainly have at least a minimal web site, and thus url's. It might be nice to look for them and add them to the article. otherwise, keep up the good work.

I like xyroth's idea about links to the websites of all those galleries and museums. Do I have to present them differently from links to other parts of H2G2?
It'll take me a little time to work out all those urls.

Hi Gnomon,
Fair enough - I get confused over "up" and "down" quite regularly: why is it you go "up" to the city (in London we go "up West"), but that same area is "downtown"? Personally I blame New York, New York (a heck of a town where, as we know, the Bronx is up and the Battery's down)
And if my typing's off, it's because I'm a little stiff from bowling...

Within Dublin, it is "down" towards the river and the sea, "up" away from it. This explains why Upper O'Connell St is the North end, Upper Abbey Street is the West end and Upper Mount Street is the Southernmost.
Outside of Dublin, there are two conflicting tendencies, up to the capital and up north. People west of Dublin would talk about going up to Dublin, but people due North of it would probably not, because up for going due south seems wrong.

OK folks, here's the question. I have a list of URLs to *external* websites for various places, galleries, theatres etc mentioned in the entry. Should I list them all at the end, in one big section, or should I put each one at the point where the place is mentioned?
Key: Complain about this post
