Everything is expensive in this country, despite which, and despite a lot of the cost being down to tax, we still seem to suffer underinvestment in our services, because:

Every government the UK has ever* had has subsidised the big company's, such as MC donalds, to give but an example.

They do this by not insisting that a decent wage, enough for someone to live off is paid by such company's, so, when a man, for example, who is married and has say, 2 children works for Mc Donalds, the "chicken Factory", in a bakery etc, the take home pay after tax, can be less than £180 per week.
In this example with whife and children, this man would probably recieve all kinds of government benifits to enable him to survive on such low wages.
This is paid for by our taxes, so, in purchasing my cigerettes, beer, and, well just about anything, we help Mc Donalds, and other (quite often, but not necessarily international company's), make excessive profet, by paying such low wages smiley - grrsmiley - grrsmiley - steamsmiley - grrsmiley - erm Oh, i've ranted smiley - erm Oh well smiley - erm
I've got a fair bit of bedding for my money, but not that* much, : though i didn't wan too much at a time, as I'll just replace the lot again, (hopefully in a fair few years), when it needs replacing. smiley - ermsmiley - weird

I didn't realise that about macdonalds, but at least that guy has got off his backside and taken the underpaid job, I think the problem nowadays is the lot who sit on their backsides and say, nope I'd rather live off benefits than go and do that job. Admittedly the job may not be nice but beggars can't be choosers, and lets face it they're practically begging off the government.

I agree I've probably more of a problem with those who can't be arsed to get a job.... But, its still a strange situeation when someone is working full time, and is getting paid so low that they still have to get government benifits to be able to survive smiley - erm though, I doubt MC donalds is the only perpittrator: I have a friend, who works five days a week, starting at Midnight, till about 9 in the morning, which must be smiley - erm *calculates I think it totals something like 40 or 45 hours a week, so maybe he finishes at 8.30 rather than 9.
He is a baker working, strangely enough, in a bakery, as an employee (he doesn't own the place), and I find it weird that, giving its such horrible antisocial hours to work, he still only gets £180 a week... And can't aford to buy a house and so lives with his parents, and can't therefore get married till they can afford a place of their own to live.. smiley - ermsmiley - weird NINE DAYS TILL I RETURN TO CAMBRIDGE!!!!! smiley - biggrin

Am also afflicted with an East Anglian heritage, I wonder if it is the education system or the small gene pool that account for all the typo's in this chain?

Hello

smiley - laugh Probably a combination of both, plus my contributing more than my fair share, due to me being a smiley - scientist and hence adhering to the normal stereotype of smiley - scientist types in not being able to spell or use grammer punctueation or anything else of the sort and also for writting sentences that are far too long and don't appropiately arrange the subject and verb. smiley - biggrin : ahh, East Anglia; Home, where most married couples get on like brother and sister smiley - biggrinsmiley - laugh

Moving about because I am a student in guildford, actually have a home-home in colchester, work summers in cambridge, am learning french on the side, and have a boyfriend who lives in cumbria and goes to uni in liverpool!

phew!

As for the punctuation/typos, take a look around you. A lot of h2g2 is like that, people are more interested in the content of their posts than the grammar.
