This is a self-referential forum post, that happens to also refer to a self-referential guide entry about self-reference:

Shorn Canary ~^~^~ sign the petition to save the albatrosses

I'm confused and entertained. I feel I've been tickled. Stop it!

Good entry.

A thoroughly well-written, entertaining, and informative entry. I don't see why it shouldn't be in the edited guide. Thank you for a good read. (Nice succinct discussion of Godel's Theorem, by the way! Is there an entry on that?)

You might want to fix the split infinitive in the first paragraph: "to not refer" should be "not to refer."

hey... HEY! DON'T HIT ME! IT WAS A SPLIT INFIN.. OW!

Thanks smiley - smiley

There isnt an article exclusively about Godel's Theorem, although its mentioned a couple of places. I don't yet know enough about it to do it proper justice (taking the course this term).

Didn't sound right with the non split infinitive, so I've rephrased it. Sounds a lot less arkward now I think.

Incidentally, anyone know if I need to do anything special about the o with umlaut in Godel's name? (in the entry not this post (yes, this post is self referential too smiley - nahnah))

Gnomon - time to move on

You don't need to do anything special to do the with the umlaut in either the post or the entry. You just type it in. One way is to make sure Num Lock is on, hold down Alt, type 0246 and release Alt. Another way is to cut and paste from the Character Map program.

This post created the รถ by using the Alt method.

Just had a somewhat silly idea...I don't think I'll do it unless people think it'd be good. Anyway, if I were to put in a comment with the word 'Search' in it (i.e. <!-- Search --&gtsmiley - winkeye, then searching for 'Search' using the search engine would take you to the entry on self-reference....wouldn't it?

What a lovely little entry smiley - smiley

My only thoughts are:
1) it's all me me me with you, isn't it? Except that would be you you you to me, wouldn't it?
2) maybe the barber is bald ......

You're thinking of the lateral thinking question about beards ... this question quite clearly states hair smiley - winkeye

A bald woman!

I mean... whoops, I guess I didn't read that bit very carefully because I figured it was the beard thing. Sorry.

Pete, never to have a time-specific nick again (Keeper of Disambiguating Semicolons) - Born in the Year of the Lab Rat

I think part of the strength of this entry is the way it makes so little effort to be funny, but it is. In the immortal words of Paul Whitehouse - Brilliant!

Complaints about some of the links:

1. The self-referential headers don't look quite right - but that's opinion.
2. The footnote's link should be

if this works.

1) I think you really mean: its all "me" "me" "me" with you, isn't it? ...ahem, try that again without any pronouns whatsoever:
1a) HS thinks BBS really means: its all "me" "me" "me" with HS, isn't it? Then it would be "me" "me" "me" to BBS too. Maybe we^H^H h2g2 needs an entry on the use/"mention" distinction to sort all this mess out?

2) If the barber is bald, he doesn't cut his own hair (becuase there's nothing to cut), so...then by the first half of the first sentence he does cut the hair of people who don't cut their own, including the barber himself. Contradiction.

1. I just did a search and replace on self-referential to the same with the links, I could take them out of the headers, but might seem a little inconsistent?
2. Good point, fixed and appears to work smiley - smiley

Hmm, I think the self-references in the headers should point to the headers...I'll go fix that too.

I can't see any way to do the equivalent of an A HREF tag in Guide ML, though its happening a lot in http://www.h2g2.com/Subeditors-GuideML
Any ideas anyone?

A508754 - Self-reference

Post 19

Mr. Cogito

Hello,

Isn't the equivalent in GuideML something like this?
In addition you can also include an optional POPUP="1" in there to make it popup in another browser.

Yours,
Jake
