I know ST but I feel some researchers entries get picked far more frequently. Sometimes I wonder whether I've done something wrong regards my entries or otherwise.

Personally, I never pick entries whose authors are hinting that it's time the entry was picked. But that's just me smiley - shrug

I didn't realise I was doing that just merely responding to people's comments.

BigAl Patron Saint of Left Handers Keeper of the Glowing Pickle and Monobrows

Under 'Changes in Attitude', I came across a snippet yesterday which would be well worth including if you can find some more information.

I attended a family Ba-B-Q yesterday smiley - smiley and the subject of goggiwogs somehow cropped up. My son said he has a cloth golliwog (in Scout uniformsmiley - erm) which was produced by the Scouts Association just about the time that gollies were being seen as politically incorrect. Hence it had to be withdrawn.
I've googled this briefly but haven't been able to find any more info as yetsmiley - doh, but I'll keep trying.

This cloth gollie was in addition to the enamel Scout gollie badge that also exists.

It's not surprising. There was a thankfully swift revision of attitudes after, in the wake of Powell's famous 'Rivers of Blood' speech, certain elements took up the 'Golliwog' taunt to nharass black people.

I heard Carol Thatcher on 'Loose Ends' on Saturday. Here stance is still 'It was a private conversation' (which it wasn't) and that it was very rude of someone to report it - and that all this PC nonsense has gone too far.

I wonder if she's genuinely unable to understand how out of line she was?

Sure. Wasn't suggesting any change. It was somply educative hearing her point of view - especially the week after Jo Brand's. Clive Anderson was gentle with her and gave her every opportunity to say if she could see why there'd been such a fuss.

Could the role of the Golly in Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier" be mentioned?

I was open to the idea that this was a major pop-cultural reference that I'd missed. But on googling...am I right in thinking that a golliwog makes a minor appearance in an addendum to the series? smiley - erm

No.

It's a MAJOR character in the third installment. "The Black Dossier" is in no way an "addendum", unless Return of the King is an "addendum" to the Lord of the Rings, say.

It's that page I looked at.

Don't get me wrong...things like that make me realise that there's probably enough in that series to grab my attention (I'm not usually big on graphic novels - I should try and get around to more)...but is this reference promiment enough to merit a mention?

Don't know. I'd have thought so, having read the book. Given the political sensitivities surrounding the character, its use in such a recent work is probably noteworthy. It's also a fascinatingly strange creature, with a bizarre dialect all its own, not remotely connected, as far as I can see, to any character in literature or real life.
