Magwitch - My name is Mags and I am funky.

I remember going in the local Co-op (mumble) years ago when the 'Gollys' were loose on the jars - in a little 'pocket' - I must have nicked several of them because I ended up with a soft toy version.

Ah, but that was back in the day of Green Shield Stamps and evwyfink...smiley - silly

A quick suggestion for anyone who might be interested in working on this would be to seek out a copy of a Radio 4 show called 'Richard Herring's Objective'. RH is a comedian (and a very good one, at that) in this series he looks at a different controversial object in each episode. One episode is on the Golliwog, and although it is a comedy show, it's clear that a lot of research went into it.

Particularly striking (for me) was when he read out an extract from one of the Enid Blyton books with the (racially offensive) character names changed to things he could say on the radio. One was called 'Nigel' instead smiley - smiley

It's not available on iPlayer at the moment, but it may well be on youtube or somewhere else - some of the other episodes are.
