Opti, since you are asking, I would not include that http://bnp.org.uk/tag/golliwog/ clip.
The intention behind it is, imho, the exact opposite of what it actually says. See what others think, but I would steer clear.

>>Sorry but I don't understand. What would you like me to do?
Simply add:
'The Blyton family, heirs to Enid Blyton's estate, fully endorsed the removal of golliogs from her books.'
<< Quotes within paras: Is it House Style to italicise? (it would make them more readable)>>
again there appears to be two ways one italicise the other as I've done
<< The official Beeb statement will be online somewhere. (I think that for hootoo purposes, we should regard this as authoritative. maybe even link it?)>>
>>I don't think it necessary to go that deep
I think you should. It makes it clear that:
- Thatcher's remarks were not made in private. Others preent expressed offence at the time.
- Thatcher was offered chances to explain her side, but repeatedly refused.
- (Most signifiantly) Thatcher was not fired. She was a freelance. Givenn the situation, oit was thought that it would be inappropriate to continue to use her services within a multi-ethnic production team.
And I really do think the Beeb statement should be linked. It was very well phrased and is *the* authoritative, first-hand account of the incident.
<< You may disagree with me on this one......but maybe there could be something to the effect that golliwogs have become a touchstone issue for right-leaning patriots who, failing to understand the offence, feel that they are beleagured by 'political corrctness.>>
>>Again I don't understand. Sorry.
Simply add the last sentence, begining with 'golliwogs'.
<>
>>Would you guys/gals like me to incorporate this?
On balance, I could live without it...although it is further evidence of inherent offense.
<>
>>And add this too?
Oh, Christ, no!
Oxygen of publicity, and all that. Even though it does support the 'touchstone issue for right-leaning patriots' argument.

Yeah, please do. I'd genuinely welcome feedback on whether we've now butchered your Entry. Does it now make arguments you either hadn't thought of or disagree with?

Maybe I'm a little late ith this comment (I started a new convseration on the same topic by mistake). I think 'mainly white' slave owners should be qualified, because I'm not sure it's applicabnle today. Remember vile slavery still exists.

Does it need the 'mainly white'?

Change in Attitude...
...the book The Three Golliwogs changing to The Three Bold Pixies.
Footnote here?
'The names of the three characters, Golly, Woggy and N-word*, were also changed - for obvious reasons.'
* I've euphemised here, to pass the filter - but I think the context would justify the full word in the Entry. We may, however, need approval from The Pisa People.

<<GB I'm afraid I don't follow your aside:
<<I'm reminded of the "maid" in the original Tom & Jerry cartoons - who has been edited out and her voice updated.>>
Does this mean you'd like to be credited?>>
No, thanks Opti, it was just an aside, and the Tom & Jerry cartoons I see now *are* doctored as opposed to the ones I watched 25 years ago - I've checked. But it was just a throwaway comment - and not for this entry at all

Right I have sorted out the stuff regarding Blyton. I still stand by my original feelings over italicising and the original beeb comment. I don’t understand where to put that right thinking stuff.

In a discussion behind the scenes of the BBC One Show Carol
Howsabouts:
Thatcher, the daughter of a famous former politician, described a tennis player as a golliwog and as a result was asked to deliver an apology. Thatcher refused and she was consequently dropped from the show. Although in the media aftermath, it was widely reported that Thatcher had been 'fired' for remarks made in private, the BBC made it clear that various people who overheard her remark were upset. and complained. Thatcher repeatedly declined to apologise and producers felt they were unable to use her as a freelace within their ethnically diverse production team. A spokes person for Thatcher hinted that the real reason for her being sacked by them was more likely due to the corporation bearing a grudge towards her family rather than the slur she made - but this was disputed by the BBC.

I think that forestalls some of the misinformation.

Hmm,whatever ones political affiliations/beliefs etc etc, I don't think it's adequate to describe Margaret Thatcher as 'a famous former politician'. Some people say that she's been the most influential Prime Minister since Churchill!

is it totally necessary to explain that Carol Thatcher is Margaret Thatcher's daughter? I mean she got where she is on her merit as a journalist, surely?
Nice entry Opti.
