Thanks Spiff, I honestly never knew and would never have guessed it was Lappish. 
I just assumed, because 'educated' gents and priests and such were the early explorers of Canada that everything had a Latin name or a bastardised anglo-or-franco spelling of a local native term.

The old Webster's say that 'tundra' is of Russian origin from the Finnish-Ugric, akin to the Lapp 'tundar'.
