OK, it's now been stretchified, so I've made those suggested amendments. The only thing I couldn't find was a link to a Don't Panic entry - anybody know of something suitable?

I really enjoyed it, and I learnt something too- I never realised you could alter the pitch of a song.

As someone else pointed out, it might be worth mentioning that there is a soundstrack to go with you singing; I have this horrid vision of people getting up there with some words and belting it out!

I do like the piece, very much smiley - biggrin, but I don't consider it ready as of yet. This would become the third entry on Karaoke, to misattribute the origin of Karaoke.

Karaoke may be a Japanese word, and its most current form may have originated in Japan, but the sing-along and bouncing ball have been part of broadcast television since the 1950s.smiley - erm

The added aspects of Japanese karaoke are the stand-alone equipment and selectability of songs.smiley - ok

For the purpose of any individual entry on the subject, I'd also like to see a definition of the term, to add context to the entries. Is Karaoke a verb (activity)? Is it a noun (equipment or place)? Is it an adjective (kind of place or equipment)?smiley - doh

It may be that it coule be used as any of the above. All the more reason to be more specific. (see the entry A617375 Japanese 'Box-style' Karaoke)

My family happens to use our second Karaoke machine, in our living room and sometimes at parties; but we talk about 'doing' Karaoke, too. And, some 'karaoke devices' don't use a screen at all (I still haven't figured out that one!?!?)

Good luck with this fine entry!

Hmmm. Even Kim Jong Il can't get it *all* wrong, then. smiley - winkeye

There's a mis-spelled 'decade' near the start.

Fords has a point - I think the bouncing ball singalong was an old-time cinema favourite too, pre-TV.

The etymology and usage of the term is interesting and *perhaps* worth mentioning, but I can't see it fitting into the Entry well without re-framing it into something other than "How to Survive a Karaoke Evening", to be honest. I'd be inclined to leave it out, or link to something else which covers it.

And lovely pictures!

I'm going to have to put this one on hold for a while, as this week's Stretcher is taking up all my spare time!

Hi, KB!smiley - cheers

I agree that a treatise on the etymology of Karaoke would ill befit the piece and its intent, but one cannot assume that the term Karaoke Evening is so pervasively understood that no definition of the term is useful.

Perhaps something as simple as:
"Karaoke, as a public establishment where customers sing along to pre-recorded music, originated in Japan. It was reputedly invented in 1971, but in the later decades of the 20th Century it became big in the West, and it can now be found all over the globe.

The last sentence of the paragraph, however, refers to a 'backing tape'. Since most karaoke devices use CD+G or DVD disks, rather than tapes, perhaps it could be reworked as well. And, I believe that the individual songs are referred to more commonly as 'tracks'.smiley - ok

Looks loverly! Only you missed the ',' comma after the word Karaoke, to begin the phrase 'as a ...'.
