Is there anyone else back? Are there any new users from the South East? Are there any gatherings coming up?
Well?

whoo-hoo!
welcome back, Curator Chick! I was beginning to wonder...
I'm gonna be in Cartersville, Georgia for most of July & August. If that's not an opportunity to get peeps together for a meet, then I don't know what is.

It's good to see things back online.
I could take a trip up through Cartersville. The wife and I have been traveling throughout the state to see the sites. I think we drove through Cartersville when we went to Cave Springs and Rome on Sunday.
I recommend a tour through Rome. Just follow the signs to the Visitor's Center. You can get all kinds of booklets about things in the area. They have a walking/driving tour that we took. We also drove through the campus of Berry College. The college was spectacular. It reminded me of Washington Park back in Portland. Rome was a beautiful city.
I've lived in Georgia for seven years, and I have grown to hate it. The Atlanta metro area is a dive. Yet, when I get out and see these cities of 50,000 to 10,000 outside the metro area, it sort of feeds my soul.
There really is a lot to see and do around here. If you're visiting Georgia, you really have to go through a visitors center and pick up some brochures. Check out the state parks. They're something else.

Actually, my dad taught at at Berry for a while there. Did you get to see the upper campus? I'ts about a two mile drive up into the woods. Amazingly, this is still on-campus. Damn, they've got it nice at that school.
You do realize that with all this talk about Rome, there's going to be a few people that come to this conversation with the wrong city in mind. Excellent.

We spent most of our time on campus up there. We went and saw the water wheel and everything. I'm not quite sure why you would need a water powered mill in the 1930's, but it was very pretty. I snapped a couple of shot of it, and when we had the pictures made, it was really surprising how well they came back. Without realizing it, I got a perfect reflection of the wheel in the mill pond.

I actually considered going to Berry. Until I saw the price tag. Eeg...
hmm... I'm trying to think of some other places you might be interested in checking out. I assume you've been able to go to Savannah. Have you had the opportunity to go to Jekyll island? If you're looking for someplace where you can get away from it all, that's a good a place as I can think of. Unless it's changed since I was last there (around 10 years ago), it is about halfway between tourist town, historical preserve, and deserted island. Pure escapism.
It also helps that the island is quite beautiful. To me, at any rate.

When we were on vacation early in the month, we had intended to come up thorugh Savannah, but we were in a rush to get home for a friend's birthday. Then when we were back, her boyfriend told us they were going out alone.
I've been through there. I used to be stationed at Fort Stewart.
