Phred, you seem to have misinterpreted Skanky's post a bit.

Thanks Mikey;
I was saying, Phred, that Scouts shouldn't make those negative remarks. Be positive or say nothing, and let someone who can be polite speak instead.
I repeat our code, for all the Scouts reading this thread:
'It is vital that Scouts are unfailingly polite to Researchers. When posting to the the Peer Review Page, you must always consider the feelings of those whose work you are criticising.'

Actually, I don't think so I've misinterpreted Skanyrich ...Skanky's counsel throughout this discussion has been that the H2G2 guidelines call for "unfailingly polite" comments in peer review (or just don't say anything). I was just wondering if the examples on post 22 met the criteria?

Skankyrich [?] Posted Aug 16, 2005
Personally, I would not have posted comments like that, as I feel they would contravene our Code of Conduct. There is no reason to break that Code. Say nothing rather than this.
I'm sticking my neck out here as a fairly new Scout, I know, but comments like that aren't right. Sorry guys. Flame me if you wish.

"none of the LD lot seemed to make it as far as PR, thank heaven for small mercies."
A765119 - This was written by an LDer, on her digibox, and she's still here, writing great entries - her PS says she's got 14 entries in the EG.
I'll be polite to the authors of 100 unsuitable entries, and 1000 'annoying' newbies who contribute nothing if it means we find a star like Emmily in there.
I'm pretty sure there's more around. Emmily just stuck in my mind because of the subject of her first entries.
There is no justification to be rude to anyone. If you think it's a load of old codswallop, then don't post to the thread. There are other people who will be able to.
FM, if you're an *ex* Scout, then it might be a good time to remind the Eds to take your badge away.

Yes, I think it might be a good idea to get rid of my badge, but I expected this to happen when I resigned. I do however step in as a 'ringer' when pickings look slim, so perhaps it would not be such a good idea. Perhaps the Eds value my contribution despite all my rough edges? I'll tell you what I think after reading this thread. At the end of the day Mikey and Mina are perfectly correct: there is no real justification for impolite behaviour no matter how cathartic it might feel. I am not an intransigent person, so in future I'll keep my strong opinions to myself in PR threads. I don't particularly want to alienate people, especially those friends I have made on line here, by being brutal with newbies. It just isn't worth the candle. I am, however, right virtually all of the time about newbies who show no hope whatsoever. If you don't believe me (and that means you, Jodan) look at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F48874?thread=816572 There was a glimmer of light at the end of that tunnel, but of course, it was a train.

I don't care if you think you're right all the time I don't care if you think you're the high king of h2g2 as long as you listen to Mikey and Mina and exercise some restraint in PR.
I saw that, though. That's unfortunate.

No, not unfortunate, but entirely predictable.
Anyway, don't belabour the bloody point: I'll do exactly what I said I'd do. I'm like that.

Saturnine also contributed a number of entries to the EG via a digibox. In fact, it was for her that I came up with the idea of splitting entries and combining them post-PR to accomodate digibox character limits.

Some people get their badges taken away quicker than you can take a breath, but others are hanging around.
I suppose that having worked on a couple of sites with different sorts of volunteers, I'm off the opinion that a volunteer getting annoyed with someone in a thread and letting them have it, is no different from anyone else (I do it enough myself ), but if you have a badge for PR, then I don't think there's any excuse for some of the comments that I say in that internet pornography thread. It might be voluntary, but it would be nice if the Eds can be proud of us.
But maybe I've been doing the job I've got too long, where I'm paid, and trained, to be polite no matter what the provocation, so I think everyone should do it.
FM, you hadn't even posted in that thread when I composed my message, so I wasn't getting at only you. Your message was extremely mild compared to a couple of them!

Noooooo!
We need bears!
Y'know... Evolution (err... intelligent design, whatever)...
Survival of the fittest and that cr*p!
If we were all too fluffy all the time this site will become a kitchy lovin' place, with pink parfumed goo oozing out of my screen...
A nightmare!
Now, back to serious...
People who post something to PR should *expect* criticism, and not just a bunch of people being overly fluffy, cheering you up all the time while telling you in many fluffy words that your Entry will not make it... That approach gives a researcher false hopes.
BTW, I am in PR all the time, and I would like to know what you people mean by "scary place".

'BTW, I am in PR all the time, and I would like to know what you people mean by "scary place".'
So would I. It does seem to be a popular rumour at the moment. When I was a newbie, last year, I didn't ever feel that anyone was rude or scary in my PR threads and they haven't been even now that I've been here a while.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Aug 16, 2005
I too spend a lot of time in PR and don't think it's scary, sometimes people *can* seem a little harsh towards newbies but that's generally when the newbies haven't bothered to read either the House Rules or the Writing Guidelines. Hell, I've been harsh to a newbie in PR a couple of times but that's because he was an arrogant little s**t who had posted material that was not only fictional but offensive as well and then went on to get angry at people who had asked him to remove the Entry.

"When I was a newbie, last year, I didn't ever feel that anyone was rude or scary in my PR threads and they haven't been even now that I've been here a while."
It's not very surprising to me that someone who's been here a year wasn't scared off. It's like taking a look at the 'fittest' and saying 'Now which of you have ceased to survive?'
No one's advocating removal of criticism, Hell. Just the most productive form of criticism.

I should think that being told that you are the reason newbies shouldn't be allowed to submit entries to PR is probably a bit scary.

Aside...
A reputation of PR being a 'scary place' (whatever *that* means) could be a good and useful thing. However, presently it not scaring off the 'bad guys'...
