A Conversation for Talking Point: Your h2g2

I don't know how possible this is within the software (and presumably this would apply to all DNA sites, not just h2g2) but I would like to see some simple formatting tools in the forums. Nothing complicated, merely the ability to use italic, bold and underlining would be useful. Many messageboards and forums seem to provide these - and more - options these days.

So would I, it would make emphasis of words so much easier.

DNA can already support full GuideML in postings. It's disabled because it needs to be decided exactly how much GML mark-up should be allowed. It's not exactly 'simple' though. Unless you see GuideML as simple...

That'd be where buttons come in, Jim lad...

Yes. I remember that short period when GuideML in forums was switched on on the test server. You could do some really evil things with the viewer tag
If we're going to start a list of what might be nice to include. Then I'd say , , , and <QUOTE> are your basic four.

Now this is interesting. What you two don't realise is that inserted between the words "and are" is a quote tag --> < QUOTE > (without the spaces)
So obviously this bit of GuideML is enabled in h2g2, just like it is on 606 and all the rest of them, but is not actually doing anything here yet.

The quote tags are just ignored at the moment.

'It's disabled because it needs to be decided exactly how much GML mark-up should be allowed.'
Would non-GuideML tags like and still be passed through?
If we're going to have markup in posts at all, I'd like at least the sort of functionality UBBC offers.

ooh - i'd like to be able to do pre-formatted text, like so that we are able to post little ASCII-art things if we want

If it's up to me, would definitely not work. Nor would marquee.
