Conifers in garden

Hi,
I have a garden that has a boundary consisting of conifers. There is a border between my lawn and the conifers. I want to put bedding plants in the border, but I believe there could be a problem due to the nearness of the conifers. How far from the conifers should any bedding plants be placed.
Would appreciate any advice
