So would I, but only on tv, when the broadcast represents, to a certain extent, the view of the station. If the Ku Klux Klan or some (ridiculous) fundies want to march in 'defense of marriage' I'm not going to stop them, no matter how much I disagree with their views. It's important to let the non-PC groups have their say too.

Yes, but that's just the copyright stuff. The site may be owned by the BBC, but it *isn't* the BBC when it comes down to it. The idea was Douglas Adams', and it still, whatever the BBC's legalities are, remains his dream: to build a compendium of knowledge for all the English-speaking world to share.

(I don't know if that last sentence made a whole lot of sense, but what can I say - I'm a hopeless idealist.)

<<(b) will never offend anyone?>>

The point as I see it, HS, is that they were quite indifferent as to who was or might be offended in this case. I have read things here on h2g2 by people who seemed to be saying that the fact that it did offend Christians was what made the JSO so desirable, in fact what made it "art".

It's impossible to never offend anyone. Right wingers may be offended by anti-war programming, etc.

Very likely, they usually do! It makes a better story. That applies to all protestors in all circumstances...

Quite understandable... Easter *is* a Christian festival. Do they not have programming for Ramadan and Jewish festivals?

<>

The history of music in the last 500 years is inextricably linked to the church, that is what I have learned from a programme about music on the BBC WS. As for a sermon before 0600 hours, spare us! You can avoid it as easily as you say Christians should avoid offensive programming. The same applies to the rest of your statement.

I was just remarking to Jim this morning, how amusing it was that the number of complaints said to have been made has gone steadily down with each re-telling. The first news I heard about it, mentioned a figure of 10 times as many!
You know yourself, that for every one person who goes to the trouble (and in NZ the possibly horrendous expense *) of complaining, there are many who are angry, frustrated but resigned.
<>
Does this really happen on a regular basis? If so, why is that?
<>
Once again, you miss the point, I was stating that pre-emptively, assuming that the answer would be "Oh, it must be a school packed with "fundies" or some such tosh.

* In NZ, there was a case where someone who complained to the Broadcasting Standards Authority was required to pay $$$$ in court costs to the BSA! As you can imagine, the result is that average people can't afford to risk making any complaints, as who has tens of thousands of $$ hanging around in case the hearing goes against them?

Haven't I said until I am smiley - blue in the face, that I am putting the point of view of the objectors, which isn't wholly mine?

BTW, HS, congrats on your detective work. You seem to think you've done something really clever by dragging up the Death Threat Della thing, so, thanks a whole bunch. What a lovely kind person you are.

Congrats on reading the minds of the protestors, Matholwch, and knowing exactly what they think!
Of course, you know no such thing. I have learned more about the content of the JSO, from reading the thread about it, than I ever could have learned here, and there's much more to it than the schmaltzy 'message' az mentioned.
<>

You would like that, wouldn't you? How many times do I have to say it, (a) I ma defending their point of view which is not necvessarily mine and (b) there is a case for censorship! You'd be demanding it if something portrayed druids doing the kinds of things they did do... or if one of your pagan gods was as ridiculed and demeaned as our beliefs were in the JSO. What the he-double hockeysticks is wrong with this for-profit show being shown on pay-for-view?

Adellaide, or whoever you are at the moment.

If you don't want people to find out your latest pseudonym, then don't keep the thread HS found. Unsubscribe from it. Tidy up your home page and remove all the references to all the names you have used in the past. Then unsuscribe from every thread you have ever been on and start again as a new researcher.

Or not, if that is too much trouble.

Of course, you could try using your real name, as I do.

Or you could try being the sort of poster that people like to hear from...

Jez - who has never changed her name, and doesn't see the need to do so.

Yes, there was lots more to it, which *I* certainly didn't get from the thread about it so I don't know how you could have. Especially after you unsubcribed.

Anyhow, I was glad to have the chance to see it so that I could make my own mind up about it and not just rely on other people's opinions.

Here's the thing. The Bible contains and indeed in some cases glorifies stuff on a par with the worst examples of pornography and genocide there is. Not to mention a number of ideas that are frankly hateful to several groups. If you want censorship then that's your position to hold, but you should bear in mind that rationally the Bible and things based on or referring to it should be amongst the first things censored because of the material it contains.

So in fact the rest of us who are argueing against censorship are in a roundabout way actually defending your Bible and religion. Unless you're suggesting that its so indefensible that allowing critical examination of it would be worse for your religion than hiding it away and selectively quoting passages?

On the other hand, a public broadcaster should preferably not show bias. This can be done either by giving everyone a voice or by giving no-one a voice, at which point I have to ask what sort of public service is provided by skirting around controversial issues?

Matholwch - Brythonic Tribal Polytheist

Hi Gwyneth's smiley - catsin,

"Congrats on reading the minds of the protestors, Matholwch, and knowing exactly what they think! "

Ah, but I do. As a associated member of our local Evangelical Church I was circulated a form letter to use in objecting to the JSO. It was accompanied by notes from the Elders describing, in very Cromwellian terms, the reasons for protesting.

My only surprise is that there weren't more letters of protest given the vocal nature of the Evangelical movement. Maybe the more fair-minded ones understand the use of an off-button.

You should note that I was equally appalled at the actions of the Sikh community in Birmingham, who stormed a theatre to prevent a play about the abuse of Sikh women being put on. They claimed it defamed their religion and culture. It was written by a Sikh woman who had first-hand experience of the subject.

"You'd be demanding it if something portrayed druids doing the kinds of things they did do... or if one of your pagan gods was as ridiculed and demeaned as our beliefs were in the JSO."

Oh puh-lease! You are well aware I am against all forms of censorship, and wholeheartedly oppose this ridiculous law on 'Religious Hatred' that Tony B'Liar is proposing.

From 'Buffy' to 'Heaven and Earth' we Druids are defamed on a weekly basis. Every single documentary about Druidry paints us a charlatans or hippies, and our Gods as figments of the deranged. Do you hear us mounting campaigns against the BBC, or marching upon Parliament? No, because we are grown-ups with a well-rounded sense of humour.

Maybe the po-faced followers of JC could learn a thing or two about us before their sad religion becomes entirely extinct.

Blessings,
Matholwch /|\.

i believe the problem is the illusion that there is a separation between god and satan, good and evil, us and them. i dont believe in the idea that god is a "he" and "he is up there".i believe there is god but theres not A god. i believe each one of us is an expression of god. I don't want to, and there's no reason why I should have to, because of one or two smiley - sadfacedos, who can't let go of their supposed wit.

I've tried, for years now, to find out what it was that I did to earn your undying enmity. As you won't tell me, I am at a loss to understand how to "become the kind of poster" you like!
There's no pleasing some people, luckily, they're not the majority, and most people don't have a problem with me. You do, as do the aforementioned one or two, and I've learned in the 13 or 14 months since they signed up (they know who they are) that trying to please them is futile. I am a grown up, it's time they grew up as well.
