I confess that on occasion I myself have been a bad date. Mostly when I was in high-school and had no real idea of how to relax and have fun. I was way to self-concious and always dressed up too much and obsessed too much, until I was about 17.
However, I've also had my share of wierd dates. I guess the weirdest was not so much the date as the datee. I met this great Italian guy, we'll call him Tony to protect his identity. He came into the deli where I worked and we hit it off right away. Tony and I talked on the phone quite a bit, and really got along. He was sweet, self-confident, but also shy about some things. He was 22 and still lived with his parents, but I was 20 and it didn't bother me. Our first date was on the Fourth of July and he took me to a county fair and we rode the rides and he won me a doll. Then we sat on the roof of his house and kissed as the fireworks went off right over our heads. It was a little strained, as it was the first date, but really lovely.
I invited him to see Harry Connick Jr. in Grant Park a week later. I'm all excited that he's going to show up. The moment he got there, it was a disaster. He was whiney, petty, mean and sullen. It was like he was a totally different person. After about an hour we all just did our best to ignore him and have a good time, all the while me throwing apologetic looks to my friends and taking him off to buy food and soda whenever I can so they can enjoy the concert.
On the EL on the way home, we separate from the rest of the group and I start in on the "I really like you, but..." speach and he tells me to stop. He admitted something really incredible. He had MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). Right in front of me he "flipped" into the Tony personality that I knew. He was suddenly his charming, enjoyable self again and he begged me not to stop seeing him. The problem was, I only liked one of his personalities, and as a kid myself, I was totally unprepared to deal with MPD. I used to have a friend with 3 personalities and I couldn't imagine trying to be in love with someone who was constantly different people.
It was really unbelievable, and my friend always say I win when it comes to dating nightmares.

Thanks, but then I read the one with the girl who dated a con-artist who stole her car. I think that one beats me by a mile.
