A Conversation for Talking Point: Should Cannabis be Legalised?

Medicinal Uses...

Pot is an mild analgesic. I've come home from work with slight headaches many times. Instead of taking an aspirin, I take a couple of puffs, and within minutes, my headache is gone. Sometimes I can actually feel it melting away.

I would also recommend it for anyone undergoing extreme depression. My sister died three years ago. My mom went on anti-depressants, while I smoked pot. I think I got the better end of the deal - anti-depressants have all sorts of side effects. Pot didn't make me feel happier. I wouldn't have wanted that anyway. What pot did was help me to compartmentalize the depression, so it wasn't quite so overwhelming.

I've never seen anything wrong with pot. It was one of the things I promised myself I'd try when I was old enough - and I liked it. Some people don't, but those kind of people don't like to drink or smoke either. Weirdos.

I'm still waiting on the weird side-effects. Where's the hallucinations they promised us? My health book told me that I'd start developing chest hair and masculine characteristics... hmmm.. still waiting. Pot doesn't encourage slothfulness - often I'll get up and wash dishes or vacuum the floor after I've smoked some. And as for it being a gateway drug - the only other thing I've tried is psilocybin mushrooms, and I liked those, too. Definitely not for everyday use, however.

What I like best about pot is you can't overdose. If you smoke more pot (as Carlin sez) you'll just be wasting pot.

I had a really bad back several years ago, as in it took me three quarters of an hour to get out of bed, and any movement was agony, hobbling around with a chair as a zimmer frame. Ended up staying for three weeks solid on the living room floor. Cannabis did relieve it somewhat, total agony with any movement before, became able to move around, on the floor (though trying to get up was still very very painful). Which allowed decent nights sleep. It also made daytime TV bearable.....

It shows how daft drugs legislation is that doctors can't prescribe cannibis, whereas they can prescribe heroin and morphine, much more powerful and addictive drugs

Which is relly dumb, of course. Cannabis should be allowed for medicinal uses, especially when heroin is. Aren't governments silly?
The danger, of course, is still there. Drugs have ruined a great many lives, but if they can also benefit people they shouldn't be completely shunned... what is needed is the active ingredient without the addictive part - except that the active ingredient probably _is_ the addictive part.

Cannabis seems to have no physical addiction associated with it, however there are some reports of psychological dependance on it. Any way the withdrawl symptoms are virtually unnoticable. Looking at the addiction rates of other commonly used psychoactives nicotine is about level with heroin, alcohol is up there too, and cannabis is below caffine. The main active incredient in cannabis, the one with the main psychoactive effect, may not be the cannabinoid which is treating your symptoms, there are 80 or so all mixed in, so until they are all studied only having a particular one may not be enough......

Has anyone else found it to help with insomnia?
About half a joint works for me better than any prescribed sleep aid. After a few hours it just goes away, while they other stuff hangs around and messes up my morning.

I've always enjoyed the argument about pot creating violent criminals, my roommates and I could usually manage to order pizza while stoned but robbing anybody was pretty much out of the question.
Maybe legislature should have to actually TRY the drugs they want to outlaw. That could change the face of government as we know it.

You can use pot as a sleep aid, but I wouldn't recommend it. You'll get sleepy, but it won't give you a good night's sleep - the chances of you waking up prematurely are good (like after about four hours or so. Recommended is six to eight.) The best sleep aid is another warm human in the bed, I've found.

You forget... most politicians have tried the drugs they're trying to outlaw. They're outlawing them because whatever they think, it's the politically correct thing to do.
