h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

3 years ago, when i first read this poem (dedicated to me! WOW!) i fell in love with it. i have always loved trees- as a child i used to think i had been one before, and if i tried hard enough, i could be one again... and i loved willows more than any other.
i loved this poem, and was honored and amazed that something so beautiful was for me! i wrote it out, and carried it around for months and months...

then i moved. and got disconnected from h2g2 and most of my life, and in the process, i lost the copy of this poem. however, since i was losing my tv, bed, belongings, car, and home all at the same time, the poem actually managed to slip away unremarked.

Last week, i returned to h2g2 (after a 2 year hiatus) and this poem you wrote for me long ago was the first link to my past life here that jumped out and bit me. i didn't know i had lost it until i found it!

Its meaning is all the more powerful now, having gone through the trials of the passing years. I always loved willow trees, but they have become my personal emblem-- though i had forgotten that this poem was the reason why. the poem haunted me without my realizing it ... and here it is-- saved for me in the Lost Poetry Office. Kes, this office has done its job today-- exactly as you said it would! it kept this beautiful poem safe here, until i could return and collect it.

I have put down fresh roots, and will be opening the doors to my new business (a pet store!) in just 2 weeks! I have asked my mother (an artist) to paint me a wall hanging with this poem on it, and it will hang in my new office in the store- to give me strength, to give me patience, and to remind me that there are people in this world who care about me.

Thank you, Zax. It's so good to know that the LPO has served a purpose. I am glad you like the poem, and, in turn, I'm honoured that it will go on display in its new home.

A pet store should suit you real well. My very best wishes for success with the whole venture. I too have changed - torn up my roots in Australia, and returned to England with the help & support of my partner (she's originally from the US). I'm about to move into my "new" home .... 'cept it's not new exactly .... it's 1,200 years old. (Yes, you read that right). It was a Saxon chapel - one of very few still standing, so we're going to be looking after a piece of history.

a saxon chapel??? how on earth did you find one available to live in??? i would have thought that anything that old (twelve hundred years- whoooooaa!) would have been a museum with velvet ropes all over it! wow! will you be posting pics of it? that's got to be good for a guide entry or two!

Hehehe. I'm starting to think it was lurking about, waiting for us to find it ... I read about it in a local history book, and then a few weeks later I found it while walking round the town (it's not obvious from the street). Then it came on the market, and we spotted it before it got advertised, and just HAD to buy it. Since then, the local historian siad he would've bought it had he known ...

I'll figure out a way to get some pics posted.

How's the pet shop coming along?

Just to let you guys know I am lurking here, all green with envy about the Saxon Chapel.

And it is really good to know that the Lost Poetry Office is serving its function well.

Kes, that's a fabulous story! kismet, serendipity, or just plain booga-booga... wish it brought ME a saxon chapel, but i'm guessing they probably didn't build enough for all those that want one!!!

did you get a good price? please tell me you had to sell your gold fillings? otherwise i'm just gonna be green with envy!

Yes ... music will sound really good in there. I can hardly wait for my piano to arrive (just five more days!!!!). ... and yes - it cost the proverbial arm, leg and several years' of gold fillings ... but we're both so happy with it. I'll give a full report on the acoustics soon!

The other thing I assume it has, is that great sense of stillness and peace you get with really old churches. It is something to do with the stone, and something to do with a thousand years of meditation and prayer.
