Gnomon - time to move on

On a quick read through, the content looks reasonably ok. There are quite a few typos and spelling mistakes. I'll point them out to you if you don't mind.

Gnomon - time to move on

Use straight quotes/apostrophes ' rather than the curly ones. You've curly ones around roll back.

Months, Years, Decades? -- no need for capitals on years and decades.

violent, but -- put a space after the comma

Move the full stop to after the footnote. Instead of . at the start, you should have . at the end.

Revolutionaries. -- remove the full stop

chop of their king's head --> chop off their king's head

The paragraph starting "Another researcher's take" is confused, as if you pasted something in there where it shouldn't be.

which lead to --> which led to

coup de tait --> coup d'état

various editions -- start this with a capital

It is doubtful -- start this with a capital

It is doubtful in the early days --> It is doubtful if in the early days

at the moment. It -- add a space after the full stop

in the opinion of some historiansis -- add a space in historiansis

title of 'Slum capital of Britain -- there's no need for the apostrophe before Slum as the phrase is in italics.

Hi Uni-Mini!

I think it's coming along splendidly, but I'd like to make some possibly useful observations.

If you want to create a definition for the historians, I'd separate the definitions and concentrate on #1. Adding in #s 2 and 3 just muddies the waters.

The concept of revolution as a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, or a far-reaching change, works when one is defining the goal of a revolution; but, as history shows us, not all revolutions are successful. So, I suggest that the revolution is the 'attempt' at a sudden and significant change, rather than related to a successful result.

Marx very probably viewed revolutions as inevitable, but not their success.

The Industrial Revolution is a good example of your definition #2, a dramatic and far-reaching change. The revolutionary aspect of it was the use of non-muscle power, automated tools, and (later) assembly lines); all revolutionary concepts. Nothing about invention is ever evolutionary to the original concept; it is always revolutionary. Evolution would be the improvements that are based on the original concept.

Not all revolutions, under definition #1, have to be rapid. They can take decades. The shortness, in the historic sense of the word, can be generations long; it's still a blink of an eye to history.

Finally, the entry has at its thesis, [This Entry will attempt to make use of both the dictionary definition and the observations of historians to establish a working definition for use by other historians.], but then fails to close with that working definition. The entry, while a marvelous read, reads more like a discussion of defining revolution, rather than a working definition of the term.

Good luck with this, I look forward to its final form, whether revolutionary or evolutionary! smiley - biggrin
