...you can't get online at the right time during the day, so when you log in in the evening and spot the question you go straight there, still holding out hope that no one spotted it and you can still answer it first...

If you don't know about the popup conversations gadget, go to my space by clicking on my name, then click on the link "Conversations" on my page. This will start the gadget. It is a list of all the converations you are subscribed to at the moment. It refreshes automatically. Click on the >> to the left of the converation that you've looked at most recently and all the later ones will be marked. Then any new postings to a thread you've seen will cause it to be marked too.
