Stop! Stop!
Lucky I remember numbers using rhythm and sometimes melody - I wrote down the number of letters in each word, stared at them, and then I recognized the song!

Using Titania's theory for the number of letters, but keeping it so that there's two consonants in each word.
How's that?

Don't worry about Titania folks, I've telephoned the hospital, and they're sending the men in white coats round to take her away...
Now Now Titania, don't panic, they'll have you home in your nice, warm padded cell before you know it.
Freedom, careful how you use the phrase 'having a cow' in here, it could be misconstrued
(ask Titania why, if you can get a sane answer out of her)

If you divide the sequence up into pairs, then each pair conatins one member of a category and then a smaller member of that category... (it's lame, I know, but I'm trying here)
Like cats & dogs can go in a similar category (household pets or carnivorous mammals), mice & moles (I think moles are smaller.... perhaps it depends on the mouse <grimace>, deer and pig both have hooves....
Okay, I'm stretching it.

I second that....
Umm, then using the number-of-letters-in-the-number theory, how about......
um....
that two consonants thing is a good point... otherwise I could say (within the mammal category): Tapir, tahir, tiger, chimp, takin, camel, otter..
Going witht he theory of expanding to another animal, "mouse" would become "titmouse", a type of bird (or "dormouse"). You got me on "mole" though, as I do not right now have access to my Audobon encyclopedia.
Hmm, the next one in that sequence could be.... hm.. I can't seem to beat "ant".. I'm slow today.
Ooh, wait! It would be rabbit! That expands to "vampire rabbit"! Y'know, like Bunnicula?
