Most members of both the colonial army and the british army were involved in some form of masonic lodge. This "brotherhood" led to lackluster fighting at times. Many of the officers knew each other personally in this capacity. Check out "The Temple and the Lodge" by Baigent and Leigh.

I'm familiar with Baigent and Leigh, and I've searched for that book, but never managed to put my hands on it. Sounds interesting. I have noticed, though, that they have a tendency to reach, so I take what they say with a grain of salt.

true on the reaching bit, esp when they get excited about something , but the research seemed a little better balanced than some of their previous efforts. I'll try to find my copy and send on the publishers info

How unfortunate that they didn't make much of an effort in the fighting at first! It really chaps my hide to see soldiers only making a halfhearted effort at killing one another.
