"Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the Matrix. You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which, despite my sincerest efforts, I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden assiduously avoided, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led you, inexorably... here."
- The Architect; fictional character from the Matrix Reloaded.

Role versus Roll and Realistic versus Fantasy.
The Artist Formerly Known as Nerd42 Posted May 19, 2005
Two good topics to kick things off IF anybody signs up, are two classic GM debates:
Which is better: Role Playing or Roll Playing?
Role playing is where the focus is on the story, the writing, the acting and the characters more than the game mechanics, which many complain is just trashy. Roll Playing is where the numbers reign supreme, and everything that happens is determined by a roll of the dice, which many complain is too tedious.
Also, which is better: Realistic Fantasy or Fantastic Fantasy?
Realistic fantasy tries to keep some sense of realism and continuity between the game and the real world. Realistic fantasy worlds are usually populated by humans only.
Fantastic fantasy is very spaced out. It works like the Infinate Improbability Drive - it tells Newton and Einstein to just get lost. Fantastic fantasies can be populated by humans only but usually have a selection of multiple fantasy races - many of which oddly enough have pointy ears.
Mine's a Fantastic Role-Player.
Whaddya think? Which type is yours?

howdy howdy howdy
This isn't "still running" because it never actually "started running" but I would still like to get it started - you're the first to sign up!
Your game looks neat - I've always wanted to get involved in a star trek game. Have you ever seen mine? It's an RPG A989698

Thanks! I wanted to join a Trek thread on H2G2 but when I didn't find one, I made my own. Feel free to join if you like. I'm sure we can give you the Chief Engineer's position. Post in the Captain's quarters thread with your character. I hope you know technobabble!
In answer to your questions: Role playing, as that is much more interesting to watch characters develop, and fantastic fantasy, as there is much more scope for imagination.

Yeah, I've read "The Physics of Star Trek" and I know a little Trekkie technobabble. I'm no Mr. Scott or Gerardi LaForge but I think an engineer I roleplay will get by.
I'm still trying to make a character up. It would be cool to have some interesting Borg or Vulcan connection but I don't want my character to be serious all the time. Does your ship have a holodeck? I'm obsessed with holodecks LOL

It will have a holodeck, if I ever get around to making one! If you can't think of a race you like, how about making one up, like RoboTwig did. How about a Betazoid?

UPDATE!
Just thought I'd let you know that the Derringer now has a Holodeck!

Hmm ... maybe i could roleplay the same character from my existing RPG. I did that over at this other Superheroes game for a while. he's a hobbit. it'd be weird, but anybody can get into starfleet if they've got skills, correct? he'd just have engineering skills instead of magic skills (from the RPG)

Right. A Hobbit on a Starfleet vessel. It could work. OK, you're on. After all, infinite diversity in infinite combinations, right?

Yeah I thought that would make a really unique character on Star Trek. I read a Star Trek novel once that had an alien called an "elf" that had pointed ears and laughed alot, but wasn't a Vulcan or Romulan. It's kind of the same idea here.

I was thinking, Nerd. How'd you like to publicise this society, maybe get a few more people involved. I publicise quite a few campaigns on HooToo, why don't I do this one too?

Sure, that'd be great! I don't have that much time for it anyway - I only started it because there was no central place for DMs/GMs to talk.
