Great article, enjoyable and informative.

Some of the names look a little strange without their accents, eg Ž.

Paris Conservatory doesn't quite ring true either perhaps Conservatoire would be better.

His "Piano Concerto for Left Hand" has an interesting history did you consider mentioniing it ?

Yes - I'm not smart enough to figure out how to add accents - they don't always display OK anyway. Must become more tech-literate! smiley - smiley
Mmm - considered "left hand" and a few others .... kept it short in the end.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm lucky that I have a Mac, accents are easy but as you point out they don't always display properly on other machines.

Standard HTML caters for a number of accented letters through special symbols. The common ones are :

à
á
â
Á
À
Â

same goes for e,i,o and u. They should work in GuideML (but not postings) unless the boys at h2g2 decided they don't want no fancy foreign stuff cluttering the guide.

I've listened to my copy of Balero a couple of times since reading your article. It really is a fascinating piece, not in the European tradition at all. It's probably the relentless, gradually accelerating beat and the re-stated theme. Perhaps it was is one of the earliest "fusion" pieces. There's a great quote in the sleeve notes :

"Referring to Balero, Ravel once remarked to his fellow composer Arthur Honegger that he had provided only one masterpiece, adding ruefully that it contained no music!".

Wow! Thanks for the gen on the accents. I'll try them out at some point. I've seen some postings from foreign parts that have held onto their accents ... wonder how they do it? One of life's little mysteries, I gues.

Thanks again.
