.......flashing across my teevee screen were replays of fans launching flares onto the field of play, not in any sort of celebration for their team, but as a willing, shameful, destructive, hurtful act that HAD to be premeditated......and i fail to understand.
is this a sect, a cult, a prank gone terribly wrong ?

Certain sections of Italian grounds are controlled by hardcore fans (the 'Ultras') and for whatever reason the police will not intervene to enforce law and order in there. Whether this is due to cowardice or bribery remains to be seen.
