'There was a fourth possibility which appears to never have been seriously considered: to join France whose territory, the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, lies only a few kilometers off the South Shore of Newfoundland.' - Obviously didn't fancy becoming a nuclear test site.

You should be careful - people might begin to think you were alcoholically inclined. At least I'd drink this one - more than I can say for Mr Cohen's offering.

I don't think it was ever a real possibility in '49. But there was a large French contribution to Newfoundland culture (obvious in place-names): http://www.newfoundlandandlabrador.com/history/default.asp

As for the Red Needle: don't knock it 'til you've tried it (and recovered).

Definitely worth another look - NF has a very long association with Ireland, so I'll be back! Good work Anhaga!

A couple of things:
smiley - earthA link the T'Railway Provincial Park: http://www.env.gov.nl.ca/parks&reserves/trailway.htm
smiley - earthThe last paragraph (Confederation) could probably be removed. It's about Newfoundland & Labrador's history and doesn't really add anything to an entry about Screetch.
Other than those, good entry. smiley - smiley

I'll be putting in that link, Gordon.smiley - smiley

As for the last paragraph, it brings Screech into the happy family of Canadian drinks (providing an opportunity to link to a number of Guide Entries). I find it rounds out the entry better than the hind end of a puffin would.smiley - erm

What do others think?

I'm of the opinion that the last paragraph should stay. It does, as you said, round out the entry and give the opportunity to link to other EG entries.

Without that last paragraph, you'd have to come up with an entirely different closing paragraph or leave the ending uncomfortably abrupt.

Now I guess I'll need to find out whether or not Screech has found its way to Colorado.

Good entry!

I've made that correction.

I suspect the officer was either Lieutenant Legendary or Major General Mythical.smiley - smiley

smiley - erm how about 'Newfoundland Screech (tm)'?

I'm not sure how it could be more descriptive? I suppose we could follow the example of Caribou, Caesar, and Red Needle and go with something like
'Newfoundland Screech - The Beverage' but that would sort of imply that there is another 'Newfoundland Screech' that is an animal, a Roman family, or a medical procedure gone wrong. But, there is no other Newfoundland Screech.smiley - erm

Yes, but if I happened across this title, I would have no way of knowing that it was a beverage. My first guess was some kind of music group or cultural ritual, actually. smiley - tongueout

If you guessed cultural ritual, of course, you would be correct.smiley - winkeye

How about 'Newfoundland Screech - A Cultural Ritual (and a rum)'?

My first guess before reading it was it was going to be some time of animal, perhaps an owl

'Newfoundland Screech - a Rum Drenched in History'?

'Newfoundland Screech - "It's the rum!" ?

'Newfoundland Screech - the Official Drink of Newfoundland and Labrador' ?

'Newfoundland Screech - It's not an owl'?

'Newfoundland Screech'?

I'm open to suggestions.smiley - erm

Newfoundland Screech - 'Tis the rum!'

Gives at least a clue to what the reader is about to get.
