Topic of the Week: David Bowie
Created | Updated Feb 22, 2005
He's the chameleon of pop..the Thin White Duke. In a career spanning five decades he's been a mod, an all-round music-hall entertainer and a hippy; he's redefined glam rock, invented plastic soul, experimented with electronica and conquered the world with dance-pop. Bands from the 1970s onwards have made whole careers out of a single week of his pop life... He is of course David Jones, later named - courtesy of a Swiss army knife - Bowie (or is it Bowie?). The Man Who Fell To Earth, the first artist to embrace music on the web with open arms - all wrapped up in a chirpy Brixtonian exterior.
In our new Topic of the Week, we'd like you to tell us what you know about the unique David Bowie:
Where did he come from? Was he always destined to become a musician, or had he tried other careers beforehand? Was his appearance in the Fab ice-lolly commercial a career highlight?
From the mighty Mick Ronson to the slick Nile Rodgers, Bowie has collaborated with the best. Who do you think brought out the best in him? Were Tin Machine an incomprehensible mistake or did they rock your world?
How has Bowie's music developed over the years? What albums are particularly great, and which ones are perhaps 'only for fans'?
Which of Bowie's singles were the most successful in the charts? And has he enjoyed much success internationally?
What are his greatest achievements? Has he broken any records or won any awards?
Have you ever seen Bowie perform live? What was the experience like?
Each one of his phases in the '70s seem to trigger new musical movements - punk, new wave, goth rock, the new romantics, and electronica can all be said to have been influenced by him but what is Bowie's true legacy? Which artists have been influenced by him?
Cracked Actor: What do you think are the high and low points of his film career?
Fashion (turn to the left): Which era do you prefer? Knitted leotard, Aladdin Sane lightning stripe or his current floppy hair?
From the world of Lindsay Kemp, to the Feathers, and the Beckenham Arts Lab: can mime ever be a good thing?
And finally...Bowie or er...Bowie?
