Entry: Pancakes - A360523
Author: spoon - U126376

On making them just a moment ago, I wondered if there was something in the guide about them.

Nothing edited - to my surprise! However, there was this, which I think is ready for PR smiley - smiley

Hi, Witty Ditty!

Is the author Spoon still around at all? I agree that this entry deserves to be in the Edited Guide - I really like all the different regional variations on pancakes.

One small thing that seems to be missing is a weight for the flour in the very first recipe. If something that small is the only kind of change that reviewers want made, then I don't think you need to make an editing copy of this, just leave it to the future Sub-Editor.

I'd be happy to see this in the Edited Guide.

smiley - erm Just in case I end up being the sub-editor, could someone please tell us what quantity of flour to use, and whether it should be self-raising or plain (in case you haven't guessed, I've never made pancakes)

Hi, Whisky!

The one egg, 1/2 pint milk quantity normally seems to go with 4 oz plain flour.

There was a fair amount of discussion of pancakes on Ask h2g2 around Pancake Tuesday - it might be worth checking to see if there is any useful information there!

If the entry gets edited, it might be worth mentioning tht in some parts of Ireland (and apparently Wales) buttermilk was traditionally used instead of milk.

4 oz flour to one egg - always use plain for the basic recipe. smiley - smiley

Hiya!

Sorry about the delay, just discussing a collaborative entry with CP at the moment...

Spoon hasn't posted since November 2000, so I'm afraid not....

The weight of flour never occured to me - I make pancakes without measuring the weight of flour, I just do it by eye... but I've made so many now that it just becomes second nature...

Probably best leave that change to the sub-ed; I don't think there are really that many more changes which are needed smiley - smiley

Hmm, I thought the tablespoon only referred to sugar (which I wouldn't use anyway). Definitely only a pinch of salt!

Might be good to put an 'Optional - pinch of sugar or salt'; I don't use either personally.... but the sugar may be good for Crepe Suzettes smiley - smiley

I actually like the first pnacake off the grill. That's the one with most of the butter cooked right in.

Me, I like beer pancakes. This is sort of a pedestrian recepie, but one worth trying. You get one of the mixes where you just add water. Instead of water, you add beer. It gives it a really good flavor.
