I'm a current student and I give guided tours every week so I'm full of useless facts about the place so I'd love to write or help write it. I'd just have to wait until my dissertation is in next week.

Right, I've just about started at A11604340.
Any help with UMIST would be appreciated, I'm a humanities student and I've only ever gone there for exams

That looks like a solid structure to begin with, HonestIago.
Some info to help start filling it in:
University website: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/
Students' union: http://www.umu.man.ac.uk/index.php?section=1
Student Direct (newspaper): http://www.student-direct.co.uk/
Frankly amazing list of famous alumni, including Alan Turing, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Joseph John JJ Thomson, John Henry Poynting, Ernest Rutherford, Nils Bohr and Anthony Burgess, Anna Ford, Ben Elton and Rik Mayall (Lots of potential for linking to other Entries here too).

Student direct, a newspaper - laughs
GRIP all the way.

Oh no, was I inadvertently controversial?!
I see that GRIP is the Students' Union paper website - does it have its own online presence?

GRIP used to be the magazine for UMIST, from which I was rather rudely not made editor (so what if the other guy had a degree in graphic design ...)
Student Direct was the Salford / MMU / UMISt / Manchester paper, then Met dropped out, UMIST spent their money on Grip and very few people in Salford uni can actually read, so Manchester uni tends to run it.
Not sure what happened after the merger of UMIST and Manchester, Student Direct stayed on and grip sort of did, it doesn't seem to be avalible when I've been in the unions.
Then again, as my mancunion blues article a few weeks ago said, the future of Student Direct is hardly assured. The new editor got voted in on the back of a block vote and has never even read it before

I'm pretty sure they just run the same articles in the Student Direct each year anyway - they don't seem to change year on year. GRIP was a way better read. I think it's more or less disappeared, it seems to get published on odd occasions.

Student Direct ran the same week's TV lisitngs for a whole term one
The first 2 weeks, they were 1 week behind, then just kept reprinting the same TV listing.
Oh, and stole the best ideas from Grip
That editor I think got a job at the Guardian

That's great, cheers. Do you want a co-author credit? I didn't expect this to be a solo entry so I'm more than happy to give you it, I'm just not sure how much work people generally think earns it.
