Gnomon - time to move on

There seems to be a few different ways of using the words. What Galaxy Babe has just said is the way Egyptologists like to use the words, but I've sometimes seen the symbols themselves described as hieroglyphics, usually in less technical articles. I've tried to steer away from the word "hieroglyphics" as it only confuses things.

A proper reading now.

- Archaic Egyptian - when is this considered to have begun?

- Were symbols random, or was there a reason a particular symbol represented a particular sound?

- There's a ' missing in footnote 2

- depite = despite (Rosetta Stone section)

- Think that's all. A lot of interesting stuff in there. smiley - cheers

Thanks, Bomba. The apostrophe at the start of 'ayn is part of the word. I've added to the footnote to explain that.

depite - fixed

Archaic Egyptian - I've added to say that it was spoken from before records began

How were the pictures chosen? This is a really interesing question and probably requires a paragraph to explain the answer. I'll come up with something.

Ah, I see now. I thought it was meant to read "The 'Ayn sound' exists in modern Arabic..."

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Hi Gnomon,

I'm finished with subbing your entry, see A20725742. There wasn't much to do with it, just a thing regarding the disclaimer in the second paragraph - is it really necessary? I doubt anybody would expect 'How to read hieroglyphs in ten easy steps' or anything like that from a h2g2 article. Perhaps it could be written in a more casual manner if you'd like to keep it, like 'This Entry gives some of the background to hieroglyphs, but obviously there's much more necessary to actually read hieroglyphic inscriptions, like being able to speak Ancient Egyptian.' The reason why I'm saying this is, after I read the disclaimer, I didn't expect such an in-depth entry... smiley - smiley

I think there is some need for a disclaimer, because most of the articles on the web about hieroglyphs do in fact claim to teach you to read the things and then publish the so-called "alphabet" as if that was all there was to it. Reword as you see fit.
