This recipe has no name. My mom and I just call it "the egg thing we serve on Christmas morning"
The night before serving:
12 slices dried bread (see note)
6 eggs
1 c milk
1 t garlic powder
1 t beau monde (or celery salt, if you can't get beau monde)
1/2 t paprika
few dashes tabasco
1 T good mustard (I use dijon)
3 c shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
place dried bread in greased 9 X 13 pan in layers, with cheese in between layers. Mix everything else together, pour over bread. Don't worry if you miss spots, as it will work itself out. Cover with plastic wrap and refridgerate overnight. Next morning, bake for one hour at 350 and serve hot.
NOTE: the bread for this recipe was, until a few years ago, white sandwich bread. 12 slices of it fit quite nicely into the pan. However, other breads work quite well. My particular favorite is to get a nice, crusty loaf of sourdough and use that. You may need more than 12 slices. Basically, you want to fill the pan twice over with whatever bread you chose. Just make sure that you dry it out by leaving it out overnight!

Gourmet French Toast
slices of bread (your choice!)
3 eggs
1/2 c orange juice
1 t cinnamon
1 t vanilla
Preheat a lightly greased frying pan over medium heat. Beat eggs, orange juice, cinnamon and vanilla together. Dip your bread into the egg mixture slowly, so that the bread soaks up some of the egg. Cook in frying pan until golden brown on one side, flip. Serve with your favorite syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar.
