how about a remote controlled car? Of course, then you'd have to be careful that the controls didn't fall into the wrong hands...

Would the car's wheels work on sand, though?

* MaW is wearing sandals with no socks. The sandals are fairly conventional walking sandals, apart from their tendency not to touch the ground, but rather to suspend themselves a half-centimetre above it. This is to avoid stepping in anything unpleasant that might foul the wearer's toes. MaW has also painted his toenails with a nail varnish that matches whatever colour and pattern his bikini happens to be. It is currently an unadulterated blood red *
