How do I avoid getting blown up by the Vogons? I don't know what to do with the Sub-Etha signaling device

The Vogons will destroy the planet. The question is will you be in the hold of their ship when it happens.
If you press a button and everything goes dark you have successfully gotten off the planet in time.
Then your main problem is that you can neither see,hear, smell, taste, or feel anything.
