I'm supposed to be writing a paper on the social, political, and economic structures of ancient American civilization but I can't seem to focus on it. This has been going on all week.

I am assuming Venstre is the same as the Swedish word vänster, which means left.

I learned a new word today. I listened to the latest In Our Time, which was on the Hippocratic Oath and had to get my dictionary to look up "pessary". I guess it's never come up in general conversation...

Hummm.. I heard that programme as well, I guess that it didn't make pessary very common.

Is your life enhanced by that knowledge?

Er... It's hard to see how, but I like to think all knowledge enhances life.

Do they still have "My Word" on the beeb? I used to watch it when Frank Muir and Dennis Norden and Richard Ingrams were anchor contestants. Anyway, "pessary" is exactly the sort of word they would deploy.

A pessary is
1. a South American rodent about the size of an ottoman.
2. a small embroidered pouch worn by the Pope on ceremonial occasions.
3. a small device used by obs/gyn doctors.
4. a root vegetable grated and eaten raw with fermented mares' milk by Siberian shamans.

Regarding the first definition: what kind of ottoman? A Turkish one or a furniture one?

Bowling was much better tonight. Average is still low after last week's debacle though.

But I learned last night that what I think of as Adele's "Make you feel my love" was by Bob Dylan, and I learned this via the unlikely medium of my daughter's school choir...

I had a pretty strong hunch as to the right answer but then I found it was even easier - remove the last letter, and you have the Swedish word for it, but with the stress on the second syllable.

Useless fact numer 2,973: My hand is the same size as hers, except my thumb is slightly longer.

That reminds me of when I, many years ago, entered *the music shop (music as in instruments, notes etc) in my home town; Eric Nilsson's Musikaffär.

His widow old Mrs Nilsson would sometimes pop in to keep in touch, and she sold me some concert tickets. When I handed over the money, she grabbed my fingers and studied them.

'Do you play the piano?' she asked.

'No' I replied, 'but the flute.'

'Ah, I could tell, you have a musician's fingers, tall and slender.'

While it's always nice to receive compliments, I felt quite relieved when she finally stopped studying them and let go of my hand...

I had a similar comment from the family GP when I was young. He said they were like the fingers of surgeons or piano players.

I'm glad they're not like the fingers of sturgeons though. I don't like fish fingers
