Okay, computer smiley - geek types, I have a question.

I recently purchased a 160GB external hard drive, mostly because my iTunes were threatening to take over my measly 20GB hard drive. Okay, so far, so good. Now, why can I copy almost everything over, but it won't let me take the iTunes off the C: drive? There's one .dll file that it won't let me remove, thus simply duplicating the info on both the C: and E: drives.

In addition, I can make a copy of my current setup in the C: drive. However, when I go to paste it into the E: drive, it zips right along until it comes to a file named "chandir" which it will not let me copy.

So, what gives? What's the point of having this extra space if I can't free up the C: drive *and* make a backup of all of my stuff?!

Argh!

Housing associations are the next big thing in the UK. I'm not sure precisely how they work, but theoretically I believe they are charitable organisations, although I honestly can't quite see how that works at all. They don't do the council thing of building vast estates, but have the odd house here and there: in fact, as I understand it, new builds have to offer a proportion of the stuff they are putting up to the housing associations, which results in some very nice properties indeed. You can rent them at a subsidised rate, or you can go into shared ownership with them (minimum 25 per cent of the property's total price: you pay a nominal rent for the rest and have the option of buying them out at a later date). Preference is given to those on the council's waiting list.

Most of the properties we've been looking at are ex council of one type or another. Most of them are really very nice too. I think part of the problem in London in general is that people have this thing about blocks of flats of any description - I mean you can see why high rise blocks are a bit undesirable, but personally I really like most of the estates I've seen. But an estate means council (or, increasingly, ex council) and is therefore bad.

Unfortunately, the house prices being what they are here, it doesn't translate into great deals, or rather it does, but the prices (have I mentioned this? Yes you say? Ah) are just daft anyway.

I think I'm going to offer properly for the flat I like today. I heartily peed off the agent yesterday by continuing to drag my feet, to the extent that he got quite snitty with me. I am allowed to drag my feet aren't I? I mean, it's my problem if someone else comes and gets it, isn't it? Well, apart from the fact that I think they are worried that the Other estate agent who is showing it might get the ultimate commission...

Ag, I tend towards the idea that you are overdue a large hissy and properly self centred fit. Could you not bring yourself to get yourself into a state of mind whereby you just start issuing directives and simply refuse to admit the possibility that anyone will not fall into place? Phone up your Mum this instant and demand hairdressing. I'd be quite tempted to let S put his champagne back up plan into operation too. People expect a bride to be bossy, so you'll get away witrh it. Failing that, I sugest out and out hysterics. That's traditional too smiley - biggrin On the other hand, you'll enjoy the whole thing anyway, and you may derive far more enjoyment from letting it all hang out and laughing up your sleeves the whole time.

Sol, sounds like London's a lot like the area around here. The amount of money people pay for a condo (basically, a big flat, usually 2 stories, but narrow) is insane. Upwards of half a million. A house with a yard, unless you're willing to commute 2 hours each way to work, runs in the million dollar column.

Well, I guess that's what happens when there's so many people. People can get what they want for a crappy place, because somewhere, some sucker will buy it.

Rather sucks, doesn't it?

Welcome Edward.

Ag, is there anyway S could have a word with your mother? Although I can understand if he doesn't want to upset the applecart further by criticising your sister's behaviour.

If I had the faintest idea how to do hair, I would come straight over and give you a hand. How about sticking hairstyles into google and see what comes up?

FG, we thought about doing the eloping thing, but I want a wedding that involves my friends and family, why should the various stress factors stop me from having what I want?

Titania, nice site - was that an actual magazine cover? I thought she looked a bit weird around the waist and boobs, and when you look at what they did you can see why!

Got my florist's quote today, not as bad as I thought but not great either *starts to think about pruning*

Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

What a polite and welcoming conversation! All these nice people saying hello!

Sorry to harp on about the council house issue again...but I think there are also some myths (deliberately perpetuated) concerning housing regulations. Having a child will not guarantee that a mother will be re-housed. At most she will - depending on local regulations - increase her priority on a waiting list. A few areas (very few!) have surplus accommodation, so she will get something , generally at the lower-quality, 'difficult to let' end.

Nevertheless, local authorities have a duty of care to the homeless mother and child. If she can demonstrate that she is unable to remain within the parental home, she will be given 'temporary' accommodation. This typically amounts to a squalid bedsit in a commercially-let slum property. 'Temporary' can amount to several years. Few young women would regard this as an attractive reward.

The exception to this would be if the arrival of the new baby would cause the parental home to be overcrowded (and there are formal conditions here regarding the number of people and mix of sexes sharing bedrooms). The council would have a legal duty to re-house the mother and baby. And who could sincerely blame her for wanting out?

Anyway...that's enough for now. I've just stumbled across this thread and haven't really got the feel of whether it's the place to discuss things political. If it's not...feel free to continue in my personal space. U803114. There I will be happy to harangue....er...lecture...er...inform people about the Marxist argument that the welfare state is a mechanism for re-inforcing a low-wage economy.

Well, I'm off this afternoon to corner my mother in John Lewis and get very stern indeed.

Did I tell you we'd sorted out the shoes? Little black lace-up ankle boots with heels. The bridesmaid says they look 'really Victorian'. S thinks there are foot fetishists that would pay squillions to have me walk up and down on their backs in those boots. smiley - bigeyes I *think* this is a good thing...

Am now listening to the Wedding Vortex. The Doctor Marten thing mentioned in the first few minutes - I howled with laughter. Thanks for recommending it! Oh, the catharsis.

Welfare - I'd rather support a few cheats than have some deserving people slip through the net. And that's all I have to say on the matter.

Not a lot to say, except that I found it very difficult to get Jobseeker's Allowance in the brief period of unemployment post-university.

montana is "chandir" something to do with ipod or copyying ing music from to hard drive ,have you tried coping over via files and setting transfer .
housing association been goung about twenty or more so years inmy neck of the woods a lot are registered charities as well that helps to keep costs down a lot of councils rely heavily on them as well as they are deemed more honest lanlords than some in the private sector. mind you dont know wether it is still running there used to be a scheme that if you were living in council house and wanted to opt out of your right to buy and buy into the private sector instead you could claim a "grant" or cash amount depending on no years you have been there same if you had been on waiting list for several years .

hi edward not seen you around in my travels lately or go so used to seeing your name does not register.
and hi to any one i missed

Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

My brother was a lawyer in the period just after council housing was first sold to tenants. It seemed like a good idea. All of a sudden they found themselves sitting in a house worth thousands, which they'd bought at considerable discount. Slowly two things started to dawn:
- The money was an illusion. They had no access to it other than by selling their house. So where would they live then? Why, in another house...which they would buy with....
- When they needed repairs or maintenance, they could no longer phone up the council. This came as a major shock to many people.

Yup, funds have to be liquid in order to use them. All tied up in assets is good regardless of income level, but only in the long run.

MR, let iTunes do the work for you. Go into the iTunes preferences advanced section and set the new location of your music files there, turn on the "keep music organized" option, then use the "consolidate library" item in the "Advanced" menu. iTunes will copy all of your music files to the new location and you won't run into the problem you're seeing. I think you'll still have to delete the old files from the C drive afterwards.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

I forgot something: Hello Edward!

I've been on Jobseekers Allowance nearly three times (the nearly comes from the fact that as I'd been unemployed for a fortnight in the previous financial year I hadn't made sufficient National Insurance contributions to qualify... the first time I went on JSA I'd only had a part-time job that lasted three months, go figure). Nowadays the Job Centre scares me... every time I went in to have my book checked and get my payment they seemed to be having a chavs and junkies open day. One time a guy stabbed himself because he couldn't get an advance on his Giro so he could get more drugs!
