Irving Washington Posted Jun 24, 2008
My father once worked in a firm where one of the founding partners' names was "Brown." He didn't have much of a sense of humor, so everyone assumes that the names he chose for his boys were entirely coincidental. They were Charles (or Charlie) and James.
:-p

I used to collect odd names when I worked in the school system: my two favorites were a boy and girl respectively. Bret Dull and Daria Devoid. They could have had a tv show together...

My sister, the one who was just visiting last week, is an emergency room nurse at a major hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. We got into a similar conversation while she was here, and she told us that just recently someone who was brought into the ER in labor named their kid Tamale. But it's not pronounced like that. Oh no. They got all fancy and put several apostrophes in it. So somewhere in California, there's a Tah-ah-mah-lay.
I guess we're all lucky they didn't prefer Enchilada.

Thank goodness the wife had a bit more sense! That's just awful!

Apostrophes in the name? This wouldn't have been a Native American couple, would it?

Magwitch - My name is Mags and I am funky. Posted Jun 24, 2008
Oh the shit is really starting to the fan now...
MiL passed away less than three months ago. The *day* after her passing we were getting requests for her wedding ring and other personal items from one section of the family
Probate has recently been granted and one of MiL's sons is dealing with it. All the grandchildren benefit from the will. Today it seems, however, that the same section of the family have already spent their 'inhertitance' and are now chomping at the bit to get what's 'their's'. 'Oh we could do with this money soon'
I'm ing fuming One of them is waiting to pay the balance for his 'holiday'*, the other to pay for insurance for her car. WTF would they have done if their Grandma was still alive?
I think they visited her about 3 times in the last twelve months.
We're meeting up on Saturday to sort out the jewellery. I'm not taking it all because it will end up being weighed in. ing scallies.
Their are some people who will not be on our Christmas card list this year...or ever.
*WTF is he doing going 'holiday' when he lives off benefits anyway??? I can't afford to go abroad. I work full time
Sorry for the rant. Just needed to vent me spleen. Normal programming will be resumed as soon as possible

Mag, that's awful! There was something like that in my family -- but not so blatant.
My Aunt M was my mom's sister, and she was married to my dad's brother, so when their parents had passed, she got almost all that was valuable from both sides.
Then, when Aunt M sold her house to move to Florida, she did give some things to my mom -- some chipped handpainted china, and some jewelry that my mom remembered as having been set with much nicer stones originally.
Family -- can't live with 'em, can't take a baseball bat to 'em.

My dad's mom gave me a sewing machine, and gave my cousins $100 grand each. She didn't like my mom.

My in-laws have done some good thinking - not that they'd ever expect their daughters to bitch that much over things, but still: already now, all 3 daughters have been through the house, naming favourite things *and* subsequently sorting thm out on a list and agreeing to what goes where. So that's kind of settled - even though we certainly hope that my MiL holds up for many a year still...

Mornin All
Wet, no sign of Summer. Mrs WA has sports day today. Not good.
Scallies, I love that word, hate the people but love the word. Better than Chavs.

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Jun 25, 2008
Finally!
Finally people at the travelling centre where I switch from tube to bus see the sense in standing in two *separate* queues at 'my' bus stop, since there are two different bus lines.
The bus terminal has been *extremely* crowded due to one of the tube lines being replaced by buses because of much needed repairs being done to the tube line. There have been long - very long - queues winding all over the terminal, sometimes being impossible to separate from each other.
But yesterday - ah, the beauty! One orderly queue along the edge of the pavement, another one parallell to it but two metres away from the edge. Everyone waiting patiently until first queue has boarded the bus and it has left the bus stop before stepping up to the edge.
And then a new queue forming parallell to what is now the first queue. Repeat ad finitum. Straight queues, everyone stepping up at the same time - like a slow motion coreographic rendering of waves lapping.

*Coughs and splutters into his handkerchief.*
Urgh. I have lurgy today. That, combined with not being able to sleep last night, has left me feeling rather under the weather. Why do I have to be ill on my week off?

, Ti.
I would normally call them chavs, WA, (because that is *exactly* what they are - including the hand down the baggy pants) but scallies is a much more scathing name. Especially in the North West of England, where I live.

Right, probably the last post for a while so enjoy yourselves y'all.
Off heading down to the west country later when we've finished the packing and then onto the festival tomorrow morning.
Mags, that does sound like an awful situation to be in

It more annoying than anything, Phil. Well, after Saturday we won't have to hear any wingeing and whineing about about how bad *they've* got it. My hubby is disable for Chrissake, do they ever really ask about he's doing? Do they give a flying fig? Oh no!
Anyway, rant is most definitely over now.
Have an excellent time at Glasto, Phil - just make sure you avoid J-Cloth. (I avoided Elvis Costello for two years at the same event - for shame )

Thanks for the many congratulations. I don't think my hair's long enough for a bun.
I like the name Ilya, but I'm afraid I'm one of those people who has no idea what they'd have been called had they been born female. Sorry.
