h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Yesterday as well as being Caerwynn's birthday and independence day was my parents wedding aniversiary. For some bizarre reason my other grandma (the one that I'm not close to) decided to throw a party. Despite the fact that they separated ten years ago and have a fairly dire reconcillation five years ago, and are generally thought to be on the verge of seperation No2. The guests, other than my parents and brothers, consisted a school friend of my mothers, who hadn't realised that they'd ever separated, and someone they'd never met.

On the plus side I am now the heir to three gourgous tortosises, who have been alive longer than my parents marriage, and are, unlike said marriage, are very healthy.

Hungry. No surprise having eaten nothing but fruit all day. Still I got most of the detail sorted out on the website I was troubleshooting. It is as good as I am going to get it. Now it is just the invisible stuff - stat counters, optimizing, stuff like that.

I started up my former PL's laptop today, which he had left with me to use while I get the Sony sorted out, and it can't find its own hard drive. I will book it into PC world tomorrow for a fettling.

I drove 8 hours home to upstate NY on saturday, arrived in time to shower & go to my 10th year high school reunion. Watched half my friends get tanked & grope each other, had a lot of great talks with the other half. I'm truly the mad scientist to them now.

It was extremely enlightening. The people I really talked to were of the same type I am friends with now - laid back, friendly, caring. Its like the robert frost poem - looking back, I can see a fork in my life. For awhile I wandered down one - I made friends with the ambitious & accomplished, especially my ex-girlfriend from college. I still did that in grad school for some years, but now I've started back towards the other path. Not too late I hope.

I spent the 4th with my family. Got to hang out with a lot of my cousins ages 1-19. I wonder what the young ones think of this bearded stranger they see once a year?

Drove back to boston today. Machine broke, have to fix it. Life goes on...

That picture thing they've got going there must be very reassuring indeed for you, Witty. Bet your daughter is having the best time. I am so jealous.

I get to teach Russian today, as our demo lesson for the trainees on how you can actually teach beginners, and how difficult it is for them. I am quite nervous about this though, and am convinced I'll end up making up words in a panic. Still, they won't know...

I am in the process of rearranging my bedroom. It is becoming mine, rather than a space shared by two people. I rather like the changes already.

Of course this is a basic course on router configuration, that's why it doesn't work

Munch, the cable modem is fairly new, but that isn't to say that we haven't worn out it already. Our first one, we had to buy so H got a configurable one, the second was supplied by ntl, when the first one blew up due to a power surge (the firewall went with it). That was also configurable, but this one (after another power surge) isn't. I will pass on your suggestion to H.

We do have surge protectors now, but we do have wild fluctuations in power for some reason that the electricity people have never got to the bottom of, especially when the weather is stormy. Storms are forecasted for tomorrow and Thursday, we are having a strange summer.

My celebrations continue today as it is No1 son's first day off since the end of last week, so he said he will be getting my today. I am hoping he will get me Luis de Bernieres' Bird without Wings. Thanks for the continuing birthday wishes. Next year Iam aiming to drag the whole thing out for a week, ezcpecially as it will be a significant birthday.

I too had great fun changing things around, MR. I also cleaned the house top to bottom as I was determined to even remove every fingerprint of my ex's. It was very cathartic.

Always possible Caer, my modem went when we had a power cut. Not the most robust things. And with the storms that have been going around of late I would not be surprised. I got sooo wet at the weekend when we got hit by one while we were driving with the roof down.

Isn't that heaven? Looking back on it half of the stress with the Stepson was that the place he was trashing was the first place that I had created by myself, and it was a statement of me.

Which reminds me, I must phone him.

[k] - Thanks for the link FG, but I am still confused about the london broil - is it taking a topside roasting joint, marinading it and then either cooking it on the bbq (how does a roasting joint cook on a bbq?) or 'broiling' it in the oven, or slicing it first before cooking it. What is 'broiling'? I thought it had something to do with boiling stuff in pots but could be wrong.

Yeah, broiling is one of those words you think you know what they mean, and find that in factyou don't.

Incidentally, there are another couple of poems in the ususal thread; or - more accurately - two versions of the same thing. I am very interested to know which version people prefer.

I always thought broiling was grilling, so a London Grill to me means a mixed grill with stuff like lamb chop, kidneys, bacon, sausage and tomato or two.

I'd like to hear how the Stepson is doing too, I got quite fond of him, but then I am at a distance and it wasn't my furniture he was wrecking.
