Dangit! I'm a better adventurer than this...
Okay, I'm playing through Majora's Mask again (a Legend Of Zelda game for the N64) and easily reached the Water Temple. As I'm a completionist, naturally I'm going for the stray fairies. I know for a fact that I've done all this before.
However, I've reached a room with a lot of seesaws that the fairy mask tells me contains a fairy. I was pretty sure that it was in this little barrel that sits underwater....but I can't remember how to break it open! And every guide I find online says "break it open to find the fairy" without going into the specifics of *how* to break it.
I know it's easy, because I figured it out before without a guide's help....but Link can't break it because he's swimming underwater, the Goron dies underwater, as does the Deku, and the Zora just seems too weak to break things in general (being the only one that can go underwater, this confuses me).
....I don't know if I should keep looking for guides for this relatively simple task, or if I should just keep trying on my own....probably the latter, though. Zork players shouldn't need guides in Zelda games...

Diablo not really an MMO? I played it online over Blizzard's servers with lots of strangers and it was always referred to in the gaming press as an MMO
The new server is soooo empty compared to AD (EU). But I don't miss the huge queues to get on (up to 700 players ahead at peak times) and the queues for the BGs. But once the migration period is over and new characters can be created, it will get busier.

MMO stands for massively multiplayer. The 8 player limitation of DII makes it anything but MM. I *love* DiabloII, for the record, but it's still not a MMO.
I am considering making an alt on a Euro server one of these days. I might try to hook up with some of you!

Oh yes, I see what you mean, Marv, but it was the closest I got at the time. Ultima and Ascheron's Call just did not appeal to me.
It was SWG that opened my eyes to the closest thing to RL in a VR, such a shame that SOE totally stuffed up the game by dumbing it down and removing so much that made it unique. The player driven economy is in ashes and it's now an FPS, which I have always hated.
So WoW it is for the time being. I like MxO, but the people I played with moved to WoW, so I went too. In a raid guild currently as the new server's population is so low, it's a bit hard to find groups.

I need to play WoW. I know I'd get hopelessly addicted, but it sounds like so much fun.
Ah! I use the Zora. Just didn't hit the barrel at the right angle. Never had this type of problem in text games.

You ever played Rogue, Affy?
The Gamers Conversing in the Computer Room
Afgncaap5 Posted Jan 11, 2006
The character class, or the game?
Never the game, I'm afraid. For a gamer, I've played relatively few of the modern swing of games.

Rogue isn't a modern game by any means!
For more info check out A2266788.
You swing and miss the Quagga.

Interesting. I'll have to look into this one.
I thought you were talking about the modern game where you slink around...maybe it was called "Thief" now that I think about it....

OK, I've had a quick look on what I could find on the net about World of Warcraft, and Matrix Online - in both cases, it seems to me that you have to buy the game before you can play it online, is that correct?
When it comes to WoW, it also seems it costs to play it online, right?
See, one of the things that caught my attraction when it comes to Project Entropia (where I spend almost all my online time at home) is that it's free to download, and free to play online.
Players who *don't* deposit RL money into the game after playing a while are rare though - most (me included) don't have the patience and time it takes to make money ingame only...
Some people will deposit huge amounts of money, and some very sparingly (I keep a firm budget).
When checking the entropia forum site yesterday, I almost fell off my chair - someone had looted a *lot* of money from a mob, the highest loot ever in the game.
Hold on to your hats, ladies and gentlemen - the sum was 90,361 PED (Project Entropia Dollars)!
10 PED = 1 USD
This money can be withdrawn from the game into RL...

Yes, you have to buy WoW and pay a monthly subscription, which is one of the cheapest around. It's a beautiful game and you are paying for Blizzard's reknowned game support, both in content and customer services. There are some issues with lag, but compared to Star Wars: Galaxies, the lag is negligable as are the bugs. I consider it's my hobby and actually works out cheaper than many more 'conventional' hobbies.

Well, for now, I'm sticking with PE, I have a disciple to take care of and give guidance, and the society I'm a member of has some really nice and helpful (and generous!) people in it.
Yesterday while out solo hunting, I slayed an Atrax Young with my axe and got 88 PED of loot together with some nice items, one of them being the jaw bone from the Atrax, which can be used for making Atrax DNA...
I know I've posted this link elsewhere on h2g2, but for those who haven't seen it, and who'd like to take a look at PE:
Download the winning film on this page:

If you have trouble viewing it (like I did) try downloading VLC (it worked for me):

I was put off Project Entropia when I saw this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4374610.stm
That kind of thing whites out my geek radar... and I'm a LARPer who owns a Doctor Who scarf.

Believe me, that guy is considered a wacko by most players - just because it's there doesn't mean you have to buy it.
There was another big (but not quite as big) purchase some time ago, and it turned out that the buyer was actually a team of investors. They see the purchase of a fictional place in the game as an investment!
I want to keep it 'just a game' so I'm not going hunting there, I'm not buying an apartment there, I'm not going mining there (the owner gets tax from loots and ore/enmatter finds). They won't get a pec (PE cent) back on their investment from *me*!

Just to clarify what I just said: the majority of places to go to in Entropia are not player-owned, just some - and you are always able to tell should you wander into a player-owned area.

He also has a daft name... That's one of my two major peeves about World of Warcraft is that even on the Role-Play servers you get people with names that are just two words joined together, or their own name with a descripive prefix or suffix. My other major peeve is that there are so few quests which are tailored for a specific class. Apart from that I'm having a great time.

Nine-thousand, thirty-six dollars! That's a lot, even IF we're talking about virtual money.
And investors buying that much ether-landscape? Weird...
I need to check this out. See if I can get in on the ground floor on something....
Er....middle floor...

I've had an interesting night on WoW... did a couple of quests, started saving up for a nice mace I found in a weapons shop in Stormwind... and then got a better mace off a monster for free! Anyway, when I went back to Stormwind to spend my money and have a bit of a wander I stumbled across a little place called Cutthroat Alley so I went for a look to see what was there (nothing as it turned out) and a group of other players accused me of spying on them!
The Gamers Conversing in the Computer Room
Coniraya Posted Jan 14, 2006
There is a secluded house in Cutthroat Alley, often used by a 'certain' type of RPer . Did you RP their accusation? Quite fun to do so.

Oh and I will report the really stupid names. If a player gets to a high level with a daft name, they will get banned from WoW. So some people don't report a low level char in the hopes of eventually getting them banned at 60.
I will send someone a /w to warn them of their daft name, it is really not on as an RPer. If they have a clever reply, or there is something in their FlagRSP bio, about it being a childhood nickname, I will let it go.
When I had a guild on AD and in SWG, I wouldn't allow chars in the guild that broke the naming conventions.
